Rivalry swings Kailua’s way

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2017

It always means a little extra when neighbors square off for bragging rights. That’s perhaps even more true in a time where the OIA’s current division construction has teams from opposite poles of the island squaring off regularly, instead of the traditional focus on East-West regional play. But Castle and Kailua are, for now, back in the same division, the OIA Red. And that means, for now, a fun annual Windward-side competition. It was renewed Friday night when Kailua headed […]

Uyemura-Lee’s return boosts Castle

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2017

Sometimes, the biggest lessons in football come with a loss. If you can say, “Yes,” when someone asks if you went down fighting, then you’ve upheld your end of the bargain. It’s a rare sight, if it ever happened at all, to see the home team quit in Nanakuli Valley. And any home fan who bought a ticket to see the Golden Hawks take on Castle on Friday night got their money’s worth despite a 49-35 loss. Nanakuli went down […]

Castle to play league home games after all

By Nick Abramo on August 21, 2017

The Castle Knights got some good news despite a 41-7 football loss at No. 5 Kapolei last weekend. The Knights will play three home league games this season, according to Department of Education spokesperson Lindsay Chambers and Oahu Interscholastic League of Honolulu football coordinator Harold Tanaka. It was originally expected that the Knights would have to play all road games due to work being done to replace the regular stadium lighting with LED lighting. That work, along with work to […]

Kapolei’s offense hits a higher gear

By Nick Abramo on August 20, 2017

No June Jones. No Taulia Tagovailoa. No problem. The Kapolei offense is in fine hands with new offensive coordinator Amosa Amosa, new quarterback Kaniala Kalaola and … the head coach who has been there since the start of the Hurricanes football program — Darren Hernandez. The thinking by many in the preseason was that without Jones as OC and without Tagovailoa at QB, the Kapolei offense would be nowhere near where it was last year, when the Hurricanes made it […]
