Video: Castle at Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 I admit, I didn’t expect Moanalua to run much, but Castle went all in to stop the pass. Na Menehune ran their share of dive/draw plays for awhile before Micah Kaneshiro let that pigskin fly with regularity. Castle’s still in a fight for a playoff berth. Moanalua? On a good night, they can scare anybody. A receiving corps like that, plus Kaneshiro’s arm, is a rare treat for most programs.

Castle and Kaimuki battle for playoff berth

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 1, 2013

Castle’s streak of postseason appearances hinges on maintaining its run of success against Kaimuki. The Knights (2-5 overall, 1-4 OIA Red East) travel to Hawaii Kai on Friday to face the Bulldogs (1-6, 0-5) with the conference’s final playoff berth at stake. Kickoff at Kaiser Stadium is scheduled for around 7:30 p.m. (following the 5 p.m. junior varsity game). Castle enters the regular-season finale for both teams a game ahead in the standings. But a Kaimuki win on homecoming night would […]

Update: Moanalua 39, Castle 14, final

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2013

6:55 p.m. Picture-perfect weather here at Moanalua. Slight breezes, no ominous clouds. Just clear, crystalline blue sky above and a short wait until Castle and Moanalua begin their varsity game. The JV game is in the fourth quarter with Moanalua ahead 21-0. Castle has a hearty squad of 25 players. The varsity game could take some time since both teams love the four-wide passing game. I say it’s a 3-hour, 10-minute contest. After all, Moanalua’s Micah Kaneshiro tossed the ball […]

Makekau makes good on start

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2013

Senior Brandon “Pono” Makekau rewarded his coach’s faith with some memorable moments on Friday night. The Castle quarterback made good on his first start of the season with 21-for-28 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns (both to Ikaika Urasaki) and no interceptions in about 2 1/2 quarters of work in a key 21-7 win over McKinley. The 5-foot-10 Makekau led the Knights in passing three times as a junior in 2012, so he wasn’t totally unfamiliar with the role. […]

Castle’s Maeda vs. Farrington’s Okimoto

By Jerry Campany on August 31, 2013

Farrington coach Randall Okimoto and Castle boss Nelson Maeda have matched wits 12 times since Okimoto took over in Kalahi in 2002, but this might be the first time one of the teams was not a decided underdog. The teams play tonight at Castle in front of OC 16’s cameras. Okimoto leads the series 7-5, but it has been a cyclical affair. The Governors have won the last two and put up 94 points in doing it. Castle surprised the […]

Oahu’s rivalry week comes early

By Jerry Campany on August 12, 2013

These are your daddy’s preseason games. So often high school coaches approach preseason games the same way NFL coaches do, getting their starters in for a series or two and settling back to watch everyone else get a chance after that. But in the first week of 2013, it seemed everyone was going for the throat. Sure, Mililani used both its quarterbacks when coach Rod York has pledged that he will choose one to be the starter when games start […]

Castle’s new turf put to good use

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2013

It was the perfect night to show off the capabilities of Castle High School’s new football field. Heavy rain pounded the new turf for most of Friday night’s preseason game against No. 5 Kamehameha. The Warriors eventually shook off the foul football weather to win 15-0. While players from both teams committed several fumbles that could be attributed to the slick ball, the field held up with minimal pooling. Castle went without home games last season as part of the […]
