Ineligibilities cause downgrade in FB contests

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2015

In the short term, there’s problems. Long range, things will be OK for the Waipahu and Pearl City football programs. Due to players who have been deemed academically ineligible, two upcoming nonleague football games have been downgraded to scrimmages — Pearl City at Castle, and Waipahu at Kailua. Both contests, which would not have been included in the league standings if played, were originally scheduled for Aug. 7. Instead, Pearl City will visit Castle for a 9 a.m. scrimmage on […]

Castle is out, but not down

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2014

The season is over for Castle, but not the hope. When coach Nelson Maeda spoke about the Knights’ 2-6 season after Friday night’s 34-0 road playoff loss to Kapolei, he did it while spinning it forward. “We got some glimpse of success, and we have something to build on for next … this coming season,” he said. That pause between the words “next” and “this coming season” said a lot. You could tell he was already thinking about, well, the […]

‘Bad call’ took away Castle’s momentum

By Nick Abramo on September 20, 2014

Castle coach Nelson Maeda called a timeout to tell the officials that the call they made could be a game-changer. And he was right, but the officials didn’t change what both Maeda and Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto termed a “bad call” after the Seasiders’ 21-13 win Friday night at Raymond Torii Field. With the Knights leading 7-0, a short pass by Stephen Lee appeared to fall incomplete. But Waianae’s Mosiah Brame picked the ball off the ground and ran 22 […]

Loss may have strengthened Castle

By Nick Abramo on September 15, 2014

Castle was a real pain in Kahuku’s side in Kaneohe on Friday, but only for a quarter and a half. After that, the Red Raiders went into battle mode and scored 38 unanswered points in a 56-19 win. Knights coach Nelson Maeda, who is known for squeezing the most out of his teams and individual players, looked like a genius midway through the second quarter. That’s when Castle held a 19-18 lead and were in charge of the game’s momentum […]

Video: Castle at #5 Waianae

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Waianae 37, Castle 7. That doesn’t tell anyone exactly how tough Castle’s defense was for a stretch early in the game. The Seariders, playing at home, struggled to run the ball against a Castle defense with eight, sometimes nine in the box. But eventually, Castle’s ironmen bent a little, the offense made mistakes, and the Seariders took advantage.

Photo Tour: Waianae

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2013

I hadn’t been back to Waianae since last year, so this was a treat. If not for a busy Saturday, I would’ve tried out that restaurant on the main road that Eli Kapu always raves about. But they close after lunch. Instead, I got there before kickoff and shot game video from ground level. That’s sometimes more intense and entertaining, especially when run-first teams are involved. Castle showed a lot of mettle and actually kept the Seariders ground game under […]
