Castle finds a legit dual-threat at QB

By Christian Shimabuku on August 13, 2016

Last season, Castle got significant results in using quarterback Jeremy McGoldrick at wide receiver, who went on to make the 2015 Honolulu Star-Advertiser all-state second team. This year, the Knights have reaped the rewards of converting Makana Smith from wide receiver to quarterback. The junior finished Friday night’s contest against Radford with 126 yards on 12-for-14 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, he rushed for 105 yards on nine attempts and two touchdowns, leading the Knights […]

Week 2 of the Hawaii high school football season begins Friday with five games on Oahu and two others involving Oahu teams taking place on Maui. It’s a new era for the Divison II state champion Radford Rams, who have moved up to Division I and left their old coach, Fred Salanoa, behind. Salanoa turned the program into an annual force, but he was never able to accomplish one goal: Beat Castle coach Nelson Maeda without the ball in his […]

Last year’s team had as few as 27 players suit up for some games. This year’s squad had a massive upgrade in that aspect with 50 names listed on the roster. Now, we get the other side of the coin. Castle head coach Nelson Maeda is not fan of the rule that was passed by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s executive board last month. Here is what Maeda believes about the new rule that takes away a set amount of time Hawaii’s football […]

Maeda: Lack of discipline hurt Knights

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2015

For many a playoff team, there is a certain type of pain reserved for this kind of defeat. For the Castle Knights, it’s a bit of that and a lot of something else. After all these years in the game, Nelson Maeda, who played football for the University of Hawaii, was as gentle and blunt as could be. “I’m sorry to see the season come to an end.
