By Paul Honda on July 25, 2019

There could have been some rough going for the Campbell Sabers in chapter one of their 2019 football season. Instead, the Sabers excelled precisely where questions about inexperience were looming. Sophomore quarterback Blaine Hipa rifled three touchdown passes and the young offensive line did not allow a sack during a tri-scrimmage with Damien and Kaimuki on Thursday night in Ewa Beach. It was an especially memorable night for first-year Sabers offensive coordinator Jaymason Lee. He got his first taste of […]

GLORY DAYS: Coach Darren Johnson and the 2019 Campbell Sabers

By Nick Abramo on June 20, 2019

FIRST IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach who has already been interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. In the eight months since, the lanky southpaw has filled out his frame with some muscle. More so, he has become efficient with his progression from the pocket. It showed on Saturday when he tossed five touchdown passes in a 30-20 win over talented Mililani in the final of the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament at […]

Steve Casey, a former Virginia Tech quarterback who coaches O’Connor, is a longtime friend of Johnson. When Johnson was a player at Arizona Western, Casey was the […]

By Nick Abramo on March 1, 2019

Campbell’s Peter Manuma received an offer from the University of Hawaii, according to Sabers coach Darren Johnson. Manuma, who is 6 feet and 190 pounds, can play multiple positions and Johnson expects the junior-to-be will get a lot more offers before his high school career is done. “He’s exciting to watch and can pretty much play anywhere on the field,” Johnson said. “In college, I think they’re looking at him as a strong safety or outside linebacker.” Manuma is a […]
