By Brian McInnis on April 24, 2019

It was a new team but the same result for Pearl City. The Chargers replaced all but a couple of players from their 2018 title team and persevered through some shaky moments to become back-to-back champions in OIA Division II volleyball with a 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 25-17 defeat of Nanakuli on Wednesday night at Radford’s Jim Alegre Gymnasium. It was the Chargers’ 12th OIA title all-time, and second in Division II. Nanakuli was denied its first OIA title. Their roster […]

Underdog Kalaheo hoping to peak in OIA final vs. Moanalua

By Paul Honda on April 22, 2019

There might be all sorts of reasons to believe Moanalua is destined to win the OIA boys volleyball championship for the seventh time in eight seasons. After all, Na Menehune were smooth as silk in a 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of Leilehua in the semifinals on Monday night at muggy James Alegre Gymnasium. What Moanalua (12-1) hasn’t seen in quite some time, however, is a 1-2 punch that Kalaheo brings. The Mustangs (12-1) were dominant against Castle in the other […]

‘Heartfelt’ team meeting sparks Punahou in upset win over Corona Del Mar

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2019

From afar, it did not seem like the Punahou Buffanblu were in need of a transformative moment. On Friday night, the seven-time defending state champions showed what they are made of with a stunning 25-22, 25-16, 31-29 sweep of nationally-ranked Corona Del Mar (Calif.) on the last day of the Clash of the Titans. “It was their senior night, so that’s to be expected, just like we would of our team,” Corona Del Mar coach Sam Stafford said. Jack Deuchar […]

Kamehameha opts for some rest before huge match vs. Punahou

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2019

There are very few weeks like this for any volleyball team. Kamehameha opted to take the path with the highest chance of capturing a state-tournament berth. When the Warriors (9-1) meet Punahou (9-1) for the ILH regular-season title on Saturday, they will be a bit more rested. Kamehameha edged Punahou on Tuesday to force a first-place tiebreaker. Then came the Clash of the Titans tourney with matches every night, including Friday’s 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 loss to nationally-ranked Huntington Beach (Calif.). […]
