Brotherhood of ‘One Team’: Raiders rolling

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2017

There was a brief time, during basketball season and a trip to the mainland, when brothers Hugh and Cole Hogland were just about out of their minds. Being only one year apart in age is one thing. But seeing your brother constantly — on campus, at practice, at home, the pressure of ‘Iolani’s 1-2 foot high pile of daily homework, playing for state champion — add it all up, and it can be a wee-bit stressful. And annoying. So Hugh […]

Q&A: Mililani’s Niino, captains Fuiava, Guillermo

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2017

Roughly 12 hours after the Mililani Trojans won their first OIA boys volleyball championship in 23 years, head coach Trenton Niino, senior outside hitter Sila Fuiava and sophomore setter Chance Guillermo were kind enough to do a Q&A with Hawaii Prep World. Fuiava had 17 kills in a five-set upset win over six-time defending league champion Moanalua. Guillermo dished out 45 assists with four kills and three blocks. They go huge performances by key role players like middle Andrew Valladeres […]

Mililani goes from rebuild to OIA title game

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2017

The dream of an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I volleyball title ended for Waipahu’s boys team on Tuesday night, while the dream continued for the Mililani Trojans. Mililani’s 16-25, 25-20, 25-20, 31-29 semifinal win at James Alegre Gymnasium was a microcosm of the Trojans’ season to date. So much potential, a deep arsenal of weapons, and plenty of defense to withstand one of the league’s hottest teams. “After the team Mililani had last year, I think a lot of people […]

‘M’ for Menehune and Maturity

By Paul Honda on April 26, 2017

They were loose, focused and dangerous. Moanalua has been perfecto through 13 OIA matches, and that efficiency was on display during a 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 semifinal win over a Kapolei team on Tuesday that entered the match with only one loss coming in. Interim coach Austin Zavala, a sixth-year assistant coach, and the coaching staff have kept things running smoothly for Na Menehune. With head coach Alan Cabanting gone for the week due to the passing of his mother in […]

Q&A: Waipahu spiker Jeminae Solomua

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

His mother, Lani Solomua, heard the name Gemini while watching a TV show one day. That’s all it took. When he was born, Jeminae Solomua was destined to become a star. The Waipahu three-sport student-athlete is the power behind Waipahu’s explosion in OIA boys volleyball. The Marauders sealed a state-tournament berth last week with a win over Kaiser. Solomua chatted with Hawaii Prep World before Waipahu plays Mililani in the OIA semifinals tonight and was featured in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. […]

Solomua sets tone for state-bound Waipahu

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2017

On a team of young players, a senior like Jeminae Solomua is more than a starting outside hitter. Solomua sets the tone. After pounding 16 kills in a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of Kaiser in the OIA boys volleyball quarterfinals on Wednesday, coach Julna Pasicaran made it clear. “Jeminae is their leader. The boys follow his lead,” Pasicaran said. “He’s a role model, involved with school government and he has good grades.” That’s a big title to place on any […]

Punahou ranked 5th in the nation

By Hawaii Prep World on April 18, 2017

The Punahou boys volleyball team is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the latest MaxPreps rankings released Tuesday. The Buffanblu added the Clash of the Titans to their impressive resume this season, sweeping both Kamehameha-Hawaii and Huntington Beach (Calif.), which is ranked No. 15 in the same poll. Punahou has failed to drop a set to a Hawaii team this season and won the Best of the West tournament last month. During the two-day event, Punahou went 6-1 and […]
