No other program has ever had more than three. Punahou also got five players on the […]

Punahou got past its moment of doubt

By Nick Abramo on May 8, 2017

Altogether it was just a little more than 5 minutes, but you could see it on the faces of the Punahou players – just a little bit of doubt. The heavily favored Buffanblu tried in vain to fight off Kamehameha-Hawaii in the second set of Saturday night’s state Division I boys volleyball final. The opposing Warriors sensed something amiss on the other side of the court and they pounced to win the set and tie the match at 1-1. How […]

By Nick Abramo on May 7, 2017

No one would doubt that Rick Tune is an authority on volleyball. And the former collegiate star and current Punahou coach, fresh off an eighth state championship in nine years, had somewhat of a bombshell to rock the Hawaii high school volleyball world Saturday night. Highly successful Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Guy Enriques will not be in charge of the Warriors next season, according to Tune, whose Buffanblu had just gotten past Enrqiues’ team in four sets in the Division I state […]

By Billy Hull on May 6, 2017

Hawaii Baptist’s lone senior was the one standing at the service line with a seventh straight Division II state championship on the line. Kellen Takatsuka, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter who starts alongside 5-foot-9 junior Michael Johnson, served the final four points of the Eagles’ 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 sweep of Kapaa in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena. HBA (23-0) extended its state tournament winning streak to 22 with a sweep of the […]

Punahou awaits KS-Hawaii’s best punch

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2017

Going by past results, Saturday night’s Division I boys volleyball state tournament at Blaisdell Arena has a heavyweight in one corner and a light heavyweight in the other. The old-timey boxing announcer could announce Punahou as “the reigning five-time champeen.” The opponent, Kamehameha-Hawaii, is the annual challenger, the team that gets super close, but can’t bring home the hardware. Punahou coach Rick Tune is relishing the matchup against the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Warriors. “They have a fantastic coach, Guy […]

KS-Hawaii’s volleyball train is in town

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2017

Every year at this time, Kamehameha-Hawaii shows up for the Division I boys volleyball state tournament. And the Warriors’ usual modus operandi is to make it far but not win the championship. Coach Guy Enriques was clear about what was needed to get past the remaining squads in their way. “We need to play a flawless match,” he said after a three-set sweep of Waipahu in the quarterfinals Thursday at Radford. He added that if any of his teams of […]
