Moanalua reclaims OIA volleyball throne

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2018

Kaiser coach Jon Stanley had a tall task Wednesday – beat the iron of OIA boys volleyball. But you can’t wave a wand and defeat Moanalua. The Cougars (12-2) didn’t, losing 25-15, 25-18, 25-11 in the league final at the Radford gym. Na Menehune are back on top in the OIA, which they feel is their rightful place. Last year was rare. They didn’t win it. Prior to that, they had won six league D-I championships in a row and […]

Kaiser will ‘fight for first banner’ against Moanalua

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2018

After all these years, Kaiser volleyball coach Jon Stanley Sr. could easily be a bit jaded and crusty. The Cougars overwhelmed the Kapolei Hurricanes in four sets on Monday night, ending the Cinderella dreams of the team that knocked out West leader Waianae last week. Now Kaiser (12-1) has only one obstacle standing in the way of a first OIA championship: unbeaten, six-time defending league champion Moanalua. Stanley, soft spoken and measured, simply can’t get enough of the work his […]

Coach Rick Tune said he isn’t keeping count of the two prodigious steaks that his team is currently on. The stunned reaction before a boisterous home crowd at Waianae was almost eerie. There was no doubt, however, that the Kapolei Hurricanes were the superior team on this night. The OIA West’s fifth-place team shocked the division’s top seed 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19. Kapolei (8-4) advances to the semifinal round and will meet Kaiser, which swept Radford earlier at Waianae’s gym. Every time Waianae (9-2) seemed on the verge of a major run, the ‘Canes settled down and simply won […]
