Girls Hoops: OIA season begins (sorta)

By Paul Honda on December 5, 2012

No, the OIA girls basketball season doesn’t begin tonight. That happened on Saturday when Moanalua edged Kailua 60-55. The schedule has changed a few times recently, and the league had to bump that game up to an earlier date. It’s an interesting time for basketball in the OIA. It’s been three (or so) years since the girls season moved from spring to winter, which means meshing the boys and girls schedules has required a surgeon’s touch. That’s a job for […]

HIADA, day 1

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2012

LIHUE — This is the Kauai Marriott Resort, loaded with lush foliage. Bromeliads everywhere. Prominently rising to the sky are 30-foot columns fitting for an emperor or two. A family of nene goose rest comfortably in on the lawn fronting a helicopter rental shop, not far from man-made streams filled with koi. And somewhere, in this mansion-esque setting, the state’s athletic directors have convened to start their annual conference. When the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association event is done by […]

Kapolei honors signees

By Paul Honda on May 8, 2012

It was a special time for a special class, which is why they made a morning of it at Kapolei. The Hurricanes gathered, 17 strong, for a ceremony to honor the college-bound student athletes. Among the 17, who were with family at the breakfast event in the school gym, was pitcher Trey Kamachi-Allen. The senior is on his way to Arizona State, his school of choice. For four other schools, Kamachi-Allen was their choice long before ASU turned up at […]

Pat Summitt

By Paul Honda on April 18, 2012

This isn’t quite high school-related, but when I worked in Kona right out of college back in the 1990s, Pat Summitt left a lasting impression on me. She announced her retirement today, news that was widely anticipated, but still stunning, at least to me. She seemed to be ageless. Steady as an oak tree and tough as one, too. UT came to the Kona Women’s Classic back in the 1990s along with three other nationally-ranked powerhouses. There was talk that […]

I did some more research.   In the years 2009-2012, Iolani played 15 games, 11 in the Championship bracket (still undefeated) and 4 in the Consolation Bracket (once beaten). Kylie Maeda played all 15, started 8 of the 11 and 3 of the 4. Interestingly, she started all 4 in her […]
