Merry Roundball, Dec. 19 (updated)

By Paul Honda on December 19, 2012

Whole lotta shakin’ going on, from ‘Iolani to Punahou to Saint Louis. Here’s the update for today, with roughly half of the opening-round games at Punahou done. Get something for your basketball jones. Wednesday, Dec. 19 • ‘Iolani Classic √ Findlay Prep (Nev.) 70, Moanalua 37 √ Coolidge (D.C.) 64, Kapolei 43 √ Montrose Christian (Md.) 60, Kahuku 28 √ John Carroll (Md.) 69, Hilo 26 (Scores updated) • Punahou Invitational √ No. 1 Maryknoll 54, Kailua 44 √ Wilson […]

Merry Roundball, Part 2: ‘Iolani Classic

By Paul Honda on December 18, 2012

Had some time off today, got some work done, then went to the ‘Iolani Classic. Opening-day scores: Yates (Texas) 76, Kalaheo 73 La Lumiere (Ind.) 75, Tsinghua (China) 39 Oak Hill (Va.) 78, Kamehameha 37 ‘Iolani 46, McKinley 27 • I asked tourney founder (and ‘Iolani girls assistant coach) Glenn Young if this is the best field ever, expecting him to say no. Instead, Coach said it is the best. Nearly 30 years after starting this awesomeness, and this is […]

Merry Roundball, Day 3 (update 10:25 pm)

By Paul Honda on December 15, 2012

Update 10:25 p.m. Oregon City (Ore.) over Dr. Phillips (Fla.) 49-44. It was interesting to see a serious run-and-gun squad like OC change its stripes in mid-stream. They were up 11 after three quarters, and by then they’d already gotten very patient with Dr. Phillips’ 2-3 zone. When the fourth quarter started, coach Kurt Guelsdorf had his team pull the ball out, and within seconds, the Panthers switched to a man defense. That still didn’t stop Dr. P from rallying […]

Merry Roundball, Day 2 (update 10:40 pm)

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2012

Update 10:40 p.m. Final: No. 3 Punahou 74, Farrington 49. This really looked great in the first six minutes with both teams running the break and pressing fullcourt. Then a 20-16 game turned into a 41-17 runaway before halftime. Punahou: deep, talented, fast, determined and balanced. Farrington could be formidable given time. With their big lineup, it was tough to match up with Punahou’s quickness and speed. The Govs could go small against fast teams or simply go big and […]

Merry Roundball, day 1 (update 9:30 pm)

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2012

Update 9:30 p.m. Final: ‘Iolani 52, Moanalua 29 (girls). Raiders regained momentum to start the fourth quarter. Major edge in depth for ‘Iolani. They aren’t raining in the threes like last year, but the pace is still fast and the press is still tough. Update 9:10 p.m. Nice rally by Moanalua, which got within eight of ‘Iolani during the third quarter. They’ve settled down, handled the press better. But ‘Iolani leads after three quarters, 35-25. The Raiders rotate five players in, […]

Merry Roundball

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2012

That’s right. Christmas is here. You can tell me it’s on Dec. 25, and that Christmas Eve is on the 24th. All the stuff about the jolly guy with the white beard and the crazy red suit. Flying reindeer. FLYING REINDEER. Come on, man. Is that what it’s about? The long lines in malls? The horrible parking? Spending more than you can afford for gifts that kids and grownups may or may not like? At all? Nah, I’ve outgrown all […]

Pupule hoops tour: A sample platter

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2012

It’s been roughly a week since I embarked on the annual preseason Roundball route, a.k.a. Pupule hoops tour. In years (decades, actually) past, the tour includes preseason tournaments. That’s still in play. But it also used to include games against some of the varsity teams on the Big Island. Me and and handful of hoopaholic friends would pile into our jalopies and trod on to faraway destinations like Kohala, Hawaii Prep, Honokaa, Laupahoehoe and even across the island to Pahoa, […]

Kapolei-Radford epilogue

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2012

Some notes from last night’s Kapolei-Radford girls basketball game, which was the OIA regular-season opener for both. • The smaller team, Kapolei, was relentless with its fullcourt press. Even the halfcourt matchup 2-3 zone was effective. The Hurricanes forced 21 turnovers, but committed 24 of their own. It’s a high number, but the fact that they could get the Lady Rams into a faster pace was important. • With Radford’s backcourt struggling against pressure, the bigs had limited touches. Korie […]
