Which Konawaena team is this?

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2013

I could not help but wonder, in this post-Lia Galdeira-Dawnyelle Awa era at Konawaena, is this going to be a repeat of 2008? In ’08, the Wildcats were coming off a state title in girls basketball, but the cupboard was almost bare. All the talented four-year starters, like Jessica Hanato and Jazzmin Awa-Williams, had graduated. Sure enough, Konawaena won the BIIF, but fell in the quarterfinals of the state tourney. I remember that game, the talent and hustle of All-State […]

Dreaming of a retro era

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2013

This is one of those old-but-new pursuits that I often don’t get around to. That’s right, for all the photos of curry plates and miso ramen I’ve ever taken (and posted) online, somehow I actually get an insane amount of work done when it comes to certain things. One of them should be dubbing my old VHS and Beta videotapes. I even bought a Dazzle* techie thing from Best Buy this week. Supposedly, as the clerk there (really good at […]

ILH takes new meaning, disturbance in force

By Paul Honda on January 8, 2013

Well, my suggested headline didn’t make it into this morning’s paper, but it’s all good. I’ll just type it here: International League of Hoops. Seriously, the ILH has provided fans with some magnificent — if sometimes plodding — basketball in recent years. The surreal efficiency of ‘Iolani’s trapping defense during the Doc Mugiishi years … the uptempo racehorses of Jesse Nakanishi at Kamehameha … and now, with imported hoopsters at Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific*, the league is even more fascinating. All […]

The gift that keeps giving, that’s what the holiday tournament season is. Three games already done at the St. Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic. Thousand Oaks (Calif.) 74, Roosevelt 42 Dakota Pierce scored 13 points and Austin Celaya added 10 for the Lancers (12-1), who trailed 4-0 before scoring the next […]

Merry Roundball, Dec. 20 (updated 10:20 pm)

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2012

Update 10:20 p.m. Findlay Prep 73, Coolidge 63. Great effort by Coolidge, and if they hit some 3-pointers in that third quarter, they would’ve taken the lead. Findlay’s big man, Gavin Schilling, dominated on the offensive glass all night long. A beast like him on the boards is one good reason to play conservatively, I suppose. Maybe the Pilots don’t have a deep bench, but a No. 1 team that plays this close to the vest, struggles at times against fullcourt […]
