Baseball, volleyball standouts sign letters

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2013

Eight volleyball players and eight baseball players were among the signees at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance letter-of-intent signing event this morning at Elks Lodge Waikiki. In all, 29 student-athletes signed letters, including record-breaking swimmer Jasmine Mau of Punahou. The senior chose Cal, and the setting for her official decision could not have been more appropriate. It was at the Elks Lodge, as a 3-year-old, where Mau learned to swim. Two-time girls singles tennis state champion Alyssa Tobita of Mililani […]

HIADA: Regionals get thumbs up

By Paul Honda on June 9, 2013

This big dance might just be on the neighbor islands. Administrators across the state passed a proposal on Sunday that will send teams across the islands for the first two rounds of the state girls basketball and boys volleyball championships. The proposal was one of several that made it out of committee and to the general assembly of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference at Ala Moana Hotel. Most of the remaining proposals involved rule changes, leaving the regionals […]

PIAA Spring Letter of Intent Day

By Paul Honda on April 18, 2013

Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance and Elks Lodge of Waikiki hosted a letter of intent signing ceremony on Wednesday morning. More than 30 signees participated in the event. Among the seniors ready to start college was volleyball standout Kupono Fey of Punahou. But unlike his peers, the 6-foot-6 senior was at home. He had contracted pinkeye the day before the ceremony. “I love the team and the coaches,” he said by phone on Wednesday. “The recruiting class is great. A lot […]

Post-tourney: Girls hoops back on the rise

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2013

Now that the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships are over, what’s left to ponder? I like the underclass movement. Seniors like Lilia Maio left an indelible mark and legacy for schools like Kamehameha, which won its first state crown since 2002. Yes, these current Warriors were in kindergarten and first grade back then. But this year has been very much about the coming wave of talent. The ebb and flow of players is a real thing. Overall talent has […]

State tourney: Day 4 matchups

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2013

Not so long ago, there were debates on the interwebs. I was there, going back and forth with basketball junkies, strung out of myriad hoop games during the preseason, regular season, playoffs and state tournaments. One of the back-and-forths revolved around Oahu basketball and Big Island basketball. There was so much grief from Oahu-centric fans about how and why ILH and OIA teams could possibly lose to Neighbor Island teams. As if it were an affront to the roundball gods. […]
