Roundball wrap: Farrington. Maryknoll. EPIC.

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2013

That’s right. What you, me and about 300 other fans saw at Moanalua High School gym on Friday night was truly, incredibly epic. Farrington 90, Maryknoll 83 in overtime. Even without the OT, when regulation ended with the score tied at 75, it was phenomenal. I live-blogged it, not just for your information, but so that I could go back and retrace the steps of this game once the awesomeness and madness was done. I don’t remember the last time […]

By Jerry Campany on December 13, 2013

The Golden Hawks, who won last year’s Division II softball championship for their first state title since a bowling crown in 1987, look to be serious contenders in OIA Red girls basketball. It’s early, but Nanakuli is tied with OIA champion Leilehua for first place. The Golden Hawks have never won the OIA. Nanakuli hasn’t risen to such heights by beating up the […]

LIVE BLOG: Kailua at Roosevelt

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2013

Final: Roosevelt 65, Kailua 48. The Rough Riders finished strong, getting 16 points from point guard Sharice Kawakami. Kailua was in this until the final minutes. The Surfriders look like a potential D-I state-tournament team. Fourth quarter, 5:15: Roosevelt 52, Kailua 38. Rough Riders are on an 11-2 run. Kailua has lost a lot of energy, partly due to Roosevelt’s tight halfcourt man defense. Roosevelt’s bigs coming up with steals for transition layups. End third quarter: Roosevelt 41, Kailua 35. […]

Spalding vs. Baden

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2013

After watching tournaments use Baden basketballs on Thursday (Alegre Invitational hosted by Radford) and Friday (Black and Gold Classic hosted by McKinley), I’m at Kailua, where the red Spalding TF-1000 basketball is in use at the Surfrider Classic. I know there are fans, coaches and even ballers who will say it doesn’t matter what brand the ball is. A ball is a ball. But an overwhelming majority of players I’ve talked to it matters. They don’t really like the Spalding […]

UH offers Konawaena’s Molina

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2013

She’s only a sophomore, but Konawaena basketball and volleyball standout Chanelle Molina is already on the University of Hawaii’s wish list. Molina, a Star-Advertiser all-state Fab 15 selection as a freshman last year, has been offered a basketball scholarship by the Rainbow Wahine. UH coach Laura Beeman talked with Molina during last weekend’s Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. “It was amazing. I heard how she changed the whole program in one year,” Molina said of Beeman. “She came up […]
