Hoops notebook

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2014

There are some headliner names in the world of ILH Division II basketball. For a few years, it’s been St. Francis, which won the state crown last year with 6-foot-5 Matthew Nuumanaia playing multiple roles. This winter, Damien has been on fire with 6-7 center Kapi‘ina King patrolling the paint. Neither has surprised like Hawaii Baptist. The Eagles knocked off St. Francis 49-48 on Tuesday at the Saints’ gym. On Friday, HBA upended Damien 51-48 and rose to 3-0 in […]

Pupule’s girls hoops ballot 1/6

By Paul Honda on January 8, 2014

Here’s how I voted in this week’s Star-Advertiser girls basketball Top 10 as of Monday (Jan. 6). Pupule’s ballot BKG 1/6/14 1. LAH 2. MS 3. KS 4. KON 5. ROS 6. HIL 7. MIL 8. PUN 9. IOL 10. HON This season is as unpredictable as I can recall in girls hoops. There is no completely seasoned, dominant team. Lahainaluna is somewhat close to that, with veteran guards and a surplus of tall, athletic bigs. They also love to […]

Video: Checking In

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2013

Here are video interviews with a player (Haka Johnson of Saint Louis), referees Eric Morales, Tony Collazo and Pat Silva, and St. Francis coach Sol Batoon. The new emphasis on illegal contact/hand-checking in high school basketball is affecting the game positively — or negatively — depending on who you talk to. Here’s the extended version of the “Checking In” story that is on this blog, which also includes interviews with Alton Mamiya of HSBOA and coach Mike Taylor of Punahou.

Checking in (extended version)

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2013

(The shorter version of this story was published in Tuesday’s Star-Advertiser.) Some coaches and players are getting downright defensive about it. One of the three points of emphasis in basketball by National Federation of State High School Associations this season is simple: enforce the hand-check rule. But the actual enforcement or lack of it has left players and coaches bewildered. From the NFHS site: Guidelines to Enforce Illegal Contact – When contact occurs that affects the rhythm, speed, quickness and […]

Pupule’s ballot: Girls hoops 12/23

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2013

Pupule’s ballot BKG 12/23/13 1. LAH 2. MS 3. KS 4. HIL 5. MIL 6. KON 7. PUN 8. ROOS 9. IOL 10. HON Not much to bicker about here. The Star-Advertiser Top 10 girls basketball poll matched up with my ballot exactly the same, a rarity. (Non-subscribers can see the poll on the front page of this blog.) I’ve been voting in polls for more than a decade, and this kind of stuff almost never happens. Maybe once a […]
