By Paul Honda on May 7, 2014

Farrington senior Penina Faumui will play basketball at powerhouse Blinn College next season. Faumui is a Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 selection, a multi-skilled player who can play guard and forward. Blinn, a community college in Brenham, Texas, reached the quarterfinals of the national junior college (NJCAA) women’s basketball championship in March. The Buccaneers were ranked No. 12 in NJCAA Division I women’s basketball prior to the tourney. Blinn (28-7) averaged 82.6 points per game and was 15-3 in Region XIV […]

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2014

Team Aloha captured the championship of the 17th annual Arizona Elite Spring Classic on Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz. Chanelle Molina, the Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year from Konawaena, scored 15 points and Farrington junior Jeneva Toilolo had 13 to lead Team Aloha over Oregon Elite White 44-39 in the tournament final. “When we left (for Arizona), I wasn’t sure we were on this championship route. But all the players stepped up for every single game. It was a nice […]

PIAA Letter of Intent signing day

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2014

Beautiful morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki on signing day for dozens of student-athletes from the islands. Among them were a handful of football players, including Punahou’s all-state offensive lineman, Davis Miyashiro-Saipa‘ia. The senior signed with Oregon as a preferred walk-on, turning down several opportunities at smaller schools. Isaac Hurd, Campbell’s big-play quarterback, signed with Southern Oregon. Among the other notable signees are Sarah Liva, Mililani’s all-state basketball player, who signed with Portland State. Punahou’s three-sport standout, Keau Fey, […]

Basketball All-State on Sunday

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2014

There’s no way to make everyone happy when it comes to our Star-Advertiser All-State selections. That’s one thing I’ve learned over the years. This year is a little more interesting. Some folks actually asked me detailed questions about the All-State picks a week, two weeks ago, thinking that we published ours already. But no, our boys and girls basketball selections — voted on by coaches and media — will be released on Sunday morning. Some people actually thought our picks […]

LIVE BLOG: Senior Basketball Classic

By Paul Honda on March 2, 2014

The inaugural Geremy Robinson Senior Basketball Classic is 2 minutes from tip-off. The girls play first, followed by the boys. Technically, they can’t call it ILH vs. OIA, but that’s how the teams are comprised. There’s going to be a slam dunk competition, plus 3-point shootouts. Might be an interesting afternoon/evening of roundball here at Moanalua High School. The concession stand isn’t open yet, but I hear they’re working on brownie plates. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students. […]
