GBB: Roosevelt 47, Kamehameha 42, Final

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2014

Healthy-sized crowd here at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium for a noon showdown between ILH power Kamehameha and OIA power Roosevelt. Coach Hinano Higa and her team seem pretty loose and focused for this road game. The Rough Riders won three games at the Ted Fukushima Invitational (Kaiser) two weeks ago. I haven’t seen them since, but yes, they are an OIA and state contender. Kamehameha? This is the post-Aloha Robins-Hardy, post-Tiare Kanoa era. That was a heck of a great team. Two […]

Run-and-gun Spartans rout Kailua 60-35

By Paul Honda on November 27, 2014

As much as any coach, Chico Furtado understands the futility of making too much of a 7-0 start in preseason basketball. But the longtime coach was thankful on the eve of Thanksgiving. The Maryknoll Spartans ran away from previously unbeaten Kailua 60-35 on Wednesday night before a fairly sizable home crowd at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium. The game was within single digits for the visiting Surfriders before Maryknoll’s suffocating halfcourt man-to-man defense took control. Lindsey Lee scored on back-to-back steals, […]

Principal: Luna transfers to Konawaena legit

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2014

The dilemma for Konawaena’s girls basketball team — a good problem or source of stress, depending on perspective — has simmered. For coach Bobbie Awa, the arrival of three prominent Lahainaluna players recently could be a blessing or a curse, depending on how things unfold over the course of the next few weeks. Konawaena is in its third week of preseason, and there are risks involved with the transfers — sisters Lindsay Bates and Taylor Bates, and guard Aloha Salem. […]

Maryknoll girls 6-0 and rolling

By Paul Honda on November 25, 2014

(A shorter version of this story ran in this morning’s Star-Advertiser.) The girls season opened two weeks prior to the boys, the time gap giving programs at many schools a chance to avoid practice-schedule conflicts. Two girls tournaments have already wrapped up. Maryknoll has been the early-preseason beneficiary, going 6-0 combined in tournaments at Farrington and McKinley over the weekend. The Spartans lost three starters to graduation from last year’s state-tourney qualifying team, but a lot of talent returns. There […]

Spikers lead LOI fall signing class

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

A dozen volleyball players were among nearly three dozen student-athletes who signed their letters of intent early Wednesday morning at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki. The event, hosted each signing season by Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance (PIAA), featured a multitude of sports for the fall signing period. The 12 volleyball players include UH signee McKenna Granato, who sparked Punahou to the state championship last week. Ten of the 12 spikers are heading to the mainland, including Kamehameha teammates Tiyana Hallums […]
