Saturday morning: What have we learned?

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2014

For basketball fans, the week of tournaments on the boys side was (and is) pretty awesome. I say awesome in the sense that there were tourneys in town, on the Windward side, and somewhat near Central Oahu (Radford). I can’t even remember the last time I saw a preseason tourney on the Leeward side or in Central Oahu. But I also say pretty awesome because, well, we haven’t gotten the matchup I wanted to see: Kalaheo vs. Maryknoll. That does, […]

Girls basketball preseason No. 1 will be…

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2014

(Note: Updates to add Hilo. I totally forgot about them in my faux ballot.) There’s no school on Saturday unless you are kid in Japan. But we did learn a thing or two that day — and in the past three weeks — on the girls’ roundball courts. I still haven’t seen all of the state’s top teams — Konawaena is 7-0, including a recent 85-2 win over Maui, and hosting its tourney next week, followed by a visit to […]

Warrior war zone

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2014

They’re so young, and their lead point guard is just a sophomore. I saw the future of the Kamehameha Warriors on Saturday and it was impressive. Even in a 47-42 loss to Roosevelt, they were gritty, relentless in the paint, and handled Roosevelt’s fullcourt press fairly well. It was in the halfcourt sets where the visitors came up with momentum-changing steals for buckets, and that’ll get better with time. “We worked well on defense, communicating well on the bench,” sophomore […]

Surfing a big wave

By Paul Honda on November 30, 2014

After a 3-0 start to preseason, Kailua lost both of its road games against ILH powerhouses this week. Even in defeat, their improvement from one night to another has been drastic, and coach Mandy Llamedo knows it. “We played three solid quarters of basketball. They went on a run in the fourth quarter. It’s tough when a team that shoots that well turns it up,” she said. “They’re going to hit eventually. If we had taken care of the ball […]

Smooth path for Rough Riders

By Paul Honda on November 30, 2014

When Kamehameha hosted Roosevelt on Saturday, I really wasn’t sure what to expect from the Warriors, who are down to three seniors with the graduation of several key players, including Alohi Robins-Hardy and Tiare Kanoa. But Roosevelt didn’t have it easy at all. They looked quicker, more cohesive and sharper in the early going and led 15-9. From there, points were hard to come by in the paint against a taller, bigger, stronger Kamehameha interior defense. But Roosevelt never lost […]

Running, gunning Raiders

By Paul Honda on November 30, 2014

Earlier in the week, I got to see Maryknoll’s evolution from a defensive-oriented team to a defense-first team that loves to run. ‘Iolani has already been there with the quick offensive transition for awhile. They were at it tonight against a dangerous Kailua squad. After sinking four 3-pointers in the opening quarter, ‘Iolani led 20-13 and enjoying the quick pace. But they went cold for the next two quarters from deep and Kailua found itself. ‘Iolani put Kailua in the […]

LIVE BLOG: ‘Iolani 65, Kailua 49, Final

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2014

Kailua had a rough go at it earlier in the week at Maryknoll, losing 60-35. That game was fairly close for about a half, but Maryknoll’s trapping defense wore the Surfriders down. It won’t get easier here at ‘Iolani. The Raiders ran and launched threes when I last saw them play Kaiser two weeks ago. They hit nine treys that night, and if Kailua gets tired, the home team will rain more treys. Last year, Tau Williams scored 44 points […]
