#10 St. Mary’s (CA) 68, Konawaena 59

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2014

Half: St. Mary’s (Calif.) 41, Konawaena 29 It’s been a rough go for the upset-minded Wildcats against a swarming, trapping Rams defense. The normally sure-handed ‘Cats have 10 turnovers against the nation’s No. 10 team. End Q3: St. Mary’s 57, Konawaena 46 The Rams opened the lead to 52-36, but Konawaena made a run and got within 9 before self-destucting with more turnovers in the last 2 minutes. FINAL: St. Mary’s 68, Konawaena 59 > S—Aquira DeCosta 14, Kat Tudor […]

No mountain too high for Wildcats

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2014

It was a long 48 hours for the team from mauka side. Kealakekua is mostly on a slope, its local high school bordered by ranch land, cows and horses. Perched roughly 800 feet above the sea, it takes some time to get down to historic Kealakekua Bay. When the Konawaena Wildcats arrived on Oahu after a 7 a.m. flight on Thursday morning, there was no talk of dominating opponents, of threading the needle, so to speak, and getting past nationally-ranked […]

UPSET CITY: Konawaena 49, #1 Riverdale 41

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2014

Took almost an hour to get from the OIA-ILH Challenge (Moanalua High School) to ‘Iolani, where the Konawaena-Riverdale Baptist game was running about 45 minutes late. Thank you, Lord. Riverdale is 3-1 and ranked No. 1 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Writers Poll. Q1: Riverdale 9, Konawaena 7 The Crusaders, ranked first or 16th depending on who you believe, are towering. Unlike Miramonte (Calif.), who Konawaena beat 63-62 on Thursday, Riverdale has girls 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. As tall as […]

Recap: Thursday hoop highlights

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2014

It’s Friday morning, which means the busy week is winding down for most humans. For hoopaholics, however, things are just getting a little more interesting. What have we learned after one day of the ‘Iolani Classic and OIA-ILH Challenge? >> Konawaena is unflappable. The Wildcats are one of the smallest teams in the Classic, yet nothing fazes them. They dissected Miramonte’s three-quarter press and halfcourt traps with regularity. I didn’t expect a 44-point first half by the Wildcats, and they […]

Konawaena stuns #23 Miramonte 63-62

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2014

Between all-state football photo-taking and two basketball tournaments, it’s been a lot of shifting around today. Thank God traffic was pretty smooth. I’m also thankful that I got to see — and record — an instant classic. Konawaena’s 63-62 thriller over CIF powerhouse Miramonte might turn out to be the best game of the year. It had star power: Konawaena junior Chanelle Molina scored 12 of her 27 points in the first quarter, and she added six rebounds and seven […]

‘Iolani Classic girls: Riverdale, St. Mary’s favored

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2014

A capsule look at the opening-round games of the ‘Iolani Classic girls tournament, which tips off today. Konawaena, Roosevelt, ‘Iolani are the darkhorses in a tourney featuring three nationally-ranked teams. Riverdale Baptist of Upper Marlboro, Md. was 28-3 last year and is a clear favorite in the Classic. They won the Dick’s Nationals title last season. Shenzen (China) vs. Riverdale Baptist (Md.), 3:30 p.m. Word is Riverdale is the real deal, the favorite to win this tournament. It’s a long, […]

Pupule’s ‘what if’ Top 10 ballot 12/10

By Paul Honda on December 10, 2014

(Updates with Kamehameha-Hawaii scores courtesy of Josh Pacheco.) Since the last post about my first faux girls basketball top 10 ballot of the season, most teams haven’t been extremely busy. Konawaena? They’ve been humming along. There was an alumni game that the old-timers won 50-49, then four wins in a row at the Konawaena Tournament. That included wins over Lahainaluna and Kailua, two teams that I expect to see at the state tourney. Here’s what my updated Top 10 ballot […]
