Konawaena steady at No. 21 nationally

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2015

The Konawaena Wildcats aren’t climbing the charts, but they haven’t been demoted, either. The latest MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Girls Basketball Rankings released on Thursday has Hawaii’s top squad at No. 21. Konawaena, coached by five-time state championship coach Bobbie Awa, was at No. 21 last week. The Wildcats are 21-1 overall. They’re still riding the momentum of two upset wins over ranked teams — Miramonte (Calif.) and Riverdale Baptist (Md.) during the ‘Iolani Classic in December. They gave eventual tourney […]

Bitanga building a contender at Kaiser

By Billy Hull on January 9, 2015

The last two undefeated teams in the OIA East girls basketball race are Roosevelt and Kaiser, which meet in the regular-season finale on Jan. 22. It’s nothing new for the Rough Riders, who are the defending OIA champions and have won three league titles since 2006. That’s not the case for Kaiser, which hasn’t won an OIA championship in girls basketball since 1989. The streak could end soon under head coach Simon Bitanga, who is building something special in Hawaii […]

No. 5 Maryknoll wins with fourth-quarter sweat

By Nick Abramo on January 9, 2015

Maryknoll’s free-throw shooting was horrendous Thursday, but a late comeback victory can cure many ills. The Spartans went 10-for-25 from the line, a paltry 40 percent, but amid the feel-good postgame celebration, free-throw shooting was not on top of coach Chico Furtado’s mind after the thrilling 47-46 over ILH rival Punahou at Ching Gymnasium. That could change when Maryknoll, the fifth-ranked team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10, returns to practice Friday. With Thursday’s win in hand, Furtado was smiling […]

MPI hoping to recover from injuries soon

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2014

Liz Kam has seen a lot in her years as a basketball player at Punahou, and as an assistant coach. When she was hired to become varsity girls coach at Mid-Pacific, Kam was prepared for every possibility that might come along for a growing program. She had no idea, however, that the Owls would ever forfeit games. Mid-Pacific has forfeited its first three ILH regular-season games due to injuries. One player has a leg contusion. Three others have suffered concussions. […]
