Akina: Transfers’ paperwork confirmed

By Paul Honda on January 30, 2015

Friday, 3:15 p.m. Updates with information from OIA. Friday, 4:30 pm Updates with a return call from Maryknoll. Moments after a convincing 75-59 win at Kaimuki — not that observers and fans needed any convincing — Kahuku coach Alan Akina reflected on his team’s progress. It’s been roughly four weeks since his young team was buoyed by the arrival of three transfers from New Zealand. They came to Kahuku just as the regular season was about to begin. Since then, […]

By Paul Honda on January 28, 2015

Aloha Salem’s senior night was a memorable one, all right. The guard scored 46 points, hitting 14 3-pointers, in No. 1 Konawaena’s 94-18 win over visiting Hawaii Prep on Wednesday night at Col. Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Wildcats remained unbeaten in Big Island Interscholastic Federation play. They are ranked No. 21 nationally by MaxPreps.

Kaiser looks like a completely different animal

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2015

On Thursday night, unranked Kaiser stepped into the charming, antiquated and tiny gym at Roosevelt High School. The Lady Cougars showed that yes, they’ve come a long way since taking their lumps from Lahainaluna, Hilo and ‘Iolani way back in mid-November during preseason. The young Cougars lost to those three Top-10 teams by a total of 108 points. That’s an average margin of 36 points. It was ugly. Kaiser’s not the same team now. Brandi Baker was a studette at […]

Recap: Rosy future for Rough Riders

By Paul Honda on January 23, 2015

Clearly, Roosevelt is the class of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, that enormous entity also known as the largest and largesse of leagues in the 50th state. Of course, just because a league is gigantic — 23 girls-basketball playing programs — doesn’t necessarily make it the best league from top to bottom. But among the OIA’s finest, Roosevelt — voted No. 2 in the state by coaches and media — is a step ahead. Literally. In all, though, it was Roosevelt’s […]

For Waianae, offensive patience is a must

By Nick Abramo on January 23, 2015

Waianae had patience to start Thursday’s game against Radford, but it didn’t last. The Seariders waited until their teammates got open in the early going in the 51-31 loss at the Rams’ gym, but by the second half, Waianae was giving up possessions left and right. It prompted Seariders coach Cyrilla Manuel to say afterward that: “turnovers killed us.” Yup, that’s what turnovers can do. And while Radford had some ball possession problems, they paled in comparison to Waianae’s. “It […]

Advancing is in Radford’s hands

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2015

Amid the cacophony of the Radford High gym after the Rams’ 51-31 girls basketball win over Waianae on Thursday, coach Charles Chong said something his girls would be wise to listen to: “We could be a great team.” The emphasis, in this case, is on “could.” After seeing the team for the first time this season, this reporter can attest to the fact that Radford does just about everything well. One area they need work on is ball control. Now, […]

Roosevelt, Mililani are top seeds in OIA playoffs

By Billy Hull on January 22, 2015

Girls-Basketball-DI-Varsity-Playoff-Bracket Girls-Basketball-DII-Varsity-Playoff-Bracket The top seeds in the OIA Red girls basketball playoffs are a pair of undefeated teams in Mililani (10-0) out of the West and Roosevelt (11-0) from the East. After that, it gets a little crazy. The Trojans had no problem finishing up the season with a 62-11 win over winless Waialua, which is the odd team out from the West in the OIA White playoffs. Roosevelt, ranked No. 2 in the state behind Konawaena, had to work […]
