Quarterfinal underdogs: Punahou, Hilo

By Paul Honda on February 11, 2015

Day 2 of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships is here. Questions abound. First, how good is Baldwin? The Bears ousted a good Leilehua squad 44-30 on Tuesday in the McKinley bracket. It was 18-15 at halftime, Baldwin ahead, and they simply pulled away. They kept wraps around high-scoring guard Jerri Maluyo (five points) and post scorer Tywanna Abbott (no points). I don’t know if Abbott got hurt or was in foul trouble or both, but the Bears […]

She […]

Let me know. Note: This is not a final all-state list or anything like that. It’s just my opinion, and there are a few players on this list I haven’t seen. But most of them have been watched by these Pupule eyes. Pupule’s Fab […]

Konawaena, Honokaa top seeds in girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 8, 2015

As expected, Konawaena received the top seed for the Division I New City Nissan Girls Basketball State Championships. The Wildcats, who were undefeated against Hawaii teams this year, get their first action on Wednesday at McKinley High School against either Punahou or Kailua. The Buffanblu and Surfriders play their first-round match on Tuesday at McKinley. Baldwin and Leilehua play the other first-round game at McKinley, with the winner facing OIA champion Roosevelt. So, Baldwin or Leilehua would potentially have to […]

Mules rout Menes, Roosevelt up next

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2015

There was Jerri Maluyo, a blur in white scoring 27 points, mostly on fastbreak layups. She was actually not very far from a quadruple double, adding eight rebounds, six assists and seven steals — with just three turnovers. There was Tywanna Abbott with 20 points and eight boards, deflecting three passes for steals during a huge first-half run. But there was no question about Leilehua’s 72-41 blowout win over Moanalua before about 300 fans at the Mules’ gym. The visiting […]
