UPDATE: Raiders 50, Warriors 49, F

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2015

ILH girls basketball tonight. If it seems like there’s always basketball at ‘Iolani Gymnasium, that’s because it’s true. The boys ‘Iolani Classic concluded last night, and here we are back on the Raiders’ hardwood. This is always a great battle between Kamehameha and ‘Iolani. The No. 7-ranked Warriors are 2-0 in league play. The No. 8 Raiders are 1-1. I haven’t seen Kamehameha yet, but Mikiala Maio has been a stellar point guard for some time now. FIRST QUARTER Maio […]

Young: Passionate about helping

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2015

For decades, Glenn Young would sit and watch. He worked tirelessly as a basketball — and football — coach, and as the founder and, basically, one-man operator of the one of the nation’s premier high school tournaments, the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. But after all the loose ends were tied up, his job was to observe and keep the wheels spinning. And right to the end, Young embraced his passion, and the prep sports world was better for it. Young passed […]

MaxPreps ranks Konawaena 9th in nation

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

Konawaena is ranked No. 9 nationally in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Writers Poll, which is released each Tuesday. Props to MaxPreps, which has kept the Wildcats in the conversation for years. After Konawaena knocked off two nationally-ranked teams in last year’s Classic, they rose in the Xcellent 25. Maybe not as high as some fans would prefer, but a team of sub-6 footers in the top 10 of a national rankings list is still something awfully amazing. To date: W […]

D-III state hoops? Someday, maybe

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

It’s early in the season, no question, but Hawaiian Mission Academy is out of the gate fast and furious. HMA is 2-0 after a 35-34 nail-biter win over Lutheran. Part of me will always root for the schools that don’t have a gym, which would be Lutheran. The Lions were down 11 points entering the fourth quarter and nearly rallied for the win. HMA, meanwhile, has had that neat little gym for ages. Most kids today have no idea that […]

That’s So Raven!

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

Moanalua responded to last week’s one-point loss to McKinley by going on the road and overpowering Castle 68-46 on Tuesday. A nice 24 points by Raven Rosa-Lasco and 14 for gunner Sienna Ho. >> And speaking of the Tigers McKinley had its first regular-season home game and lost to Kailua 42-39. Tau Williams, previously listed on team rosters as Delcie, had 11 points and point guard Tara Takata scored six. I thought Takata would score in the high teens every […]

Kintz is no secret, but wow

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

Victoria Kintz left Mid-Pacific a couple of years ago. Like a lot of families, it was no different for hers. Private school can be expensive as heck. But the move to Kaimuki was timely. Last season, she sparked the Bulldogs to an OIA D-II crown. On Tuesday, she scored 16 points to help Kaimuki edge Kahuku 41-36. Jason Kaneshiro reports that Kintz hit three of her team’s eight 3-point bombs. Freshman Kaelyn Espinda, daughter of Kaimuki boys coach Greydon Espinda, […]

Quiz on Quinlan

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2015

Who will be the first prep hoops player in the state to score 40 points this season? Yes, Keala Quinlan is sometimes mesmerizing to watch. At 6 feet (or more) tall, the Roosevelt senior is a matchup issue for most OIA opponents. Tall with adequate low-post scoring skills, a smooth stroke at the free-throw line and an always improving 3-point shot, she could dominate the OIA East again. Roosevelt is now 2-0 after a 64-51 home win over Kalani on […]
