Big Dance Marathon: Day 2 is here

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2016

Day 2 of the Big Dance, a.k.a. OC-16/HHSAA GIrls Basketball Division I State Championships, is here and it’s not what some of us expected. Last year’s OIA champion, Roosevelt, saw its state title dreams come to an abrupt end. First, the Rough Riders lost in overtime to Leilehua on Saturday in the OIA final. On Tuesday, they were soundly ousted by Mililani 64-48. The margin of victory by the Lady Trojans shocked most fans, but it’s safe to say that […]

Update: Punahou 48, Farrington 28, F

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2016

FIRST QUARTER ILH runner-up Punahou trails 10-5 as the first TV time out is called with 3:17 to go. Three-quarter press by the Buffanblu giving the Lady Governors some difficulty. Moli Heimuli is in charge for the Govs, scoring in halfcourt and transition. Heimuli scores on a nice spin move in transition and it’s 12-5. Time out, PUN. Buffanblu have center Va‘e Malufau back from a shoulder injury and they don’t look in sync yet. The quarter ends with Farrington […]

Update: Kaiser 44, KS-Maui 41, F

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2016

We are half an hour from tip-off at the Moanalua bracket of the OC-16/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships. Kaiser has had a unique, sometimes painful season because of the early-season suspension of Coach Simon Bitanga, who was investigated and then cleared by the DOE. It’s not the first time a coach has been forced to sit for a large chunk of the season only to be cleared eventually. To his credit, Coach Bitanga doesn’t seem bitter or upset […]

Big Dance Darkhorse: The Lady Vikings

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2016

The Big Dance, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hawaii State Girls Basketball Championships, is finally here. On the girls side, it’s been largely dominated by neighbor-island teams like No. 1 Konawaena and No. 2 Lahainaluna. Unlike the boys rankings (and seedings, most likely), the girls hoops scene this year has been very static. Konawaena has been No. 1 from Week 1, and Lahainaluna has been at the second spot as long. The two teams played in the state final […]

HHSAA girls basketball record book

By Jerry Campany on February 8, 2016

Fresh off its record book for boys basketball last year, Natalie Iwamoto and the HHSAA have done it again. Frank Mauz and Thomas Yoshida teamed up to bring you a record book for the girls basketball tournament. Scratching the surface finds these fine performances. But there are many, many more. We suspect OC16’s Felipe Ojastro has another trip in his future to get it bound. FIVE NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES • Kohala’s Lynette Liu scores a 3-game record 85 points. • Iolani’s […]

HHSAA girls basketball brackets

By Jerry Campany on February 7, 2016

As expected, defending state champion Konawaena received the top seed in this week’s OC16/HHSAA girls basketball tournament. Punahou paid a heavy price for coming up short in the ILH championship n Saturday, forcing it into a first-round matchup with Farrington with a meeting against the Wildcats up next. Kamehameha-Maui and Kaiser open up in the other game at Moanalua, with the winner playing OIA champion Leilehua. Lahainaluna tops the Kalani bracket and will face the winner between OIA foes Roosevelt […]

UPDATE: Leilehua 32, Roosevelt 31 (OT), F

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2016

It’s been a rollicking good time so far in the OIA Division I girls basketball final here at James Alegre Gymnasium. Roosevelt leads at the half 20-18. Leilehua led 16-10 at one point, getting huge activity near the bucket by Tianna Hanohano and Chyel Palmer. Roosevelt tied the game with 3-pointers by Ciera Uchida and Alliya Gabriel. The Rough Riders also switched from man defense to a 2-3 zone and that really stumped the taller Mules. THIRD QUARTER It ends […]

UPDATE: Kaimuki 36, McKinley 21, F

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2016

I’ll be updating at the end of quarters for this OIA Division II girls basketball final pitting McKinley (6-6) and Kaimuki (8-3). FIRST QUARTER The Bulldogs were aggressive and active offensively. Though they shot just 2-for-12, they crashed the offensive boards and were a couple of 3-point tries away from stretching this lead. Tigers hanging in there. Kaimuki leads 7-4 after one quarter. SECOND QUARTER The Bulldogs are being patient against McKinley’s man defense and have extended the lead despite […]
