It’s not often that a center handles the ball on the wing, the top and even the backcourt with regularity. For Moli Heimuli, playing all but 3 minutes or so was just another tough night at the gym. The 5-foot-11 senior was ready and able, pounding the low post, crashing the offensive boards and running the break for 35 points and 26 rebounds in a tougher-than-the-score-indicates 60-45 win over visiting Kalani on Tuesday night. “She’s getting used to staying in. The polls for high school sports are what they have always been and probably always will be: whipped cream. No nutritional value. No two ballots are alike, and I will almost always disagree with how the week’s voting went by the Star-Advertiser Top 10 panel whether it’s basketball, baseball, football, ramen restaurants, fried chicken joints, shave ice eateries, pick-up basketball courts, movies… That’s the nature of it. Not entirely a science, certainly an art. Here’s the new Top 10 released […]
The accolades are building higher for former Konawaena standout Chanelle Molina. The Washington State guard was selected as the Pac-12 freshman of the week today. The league made the announcement on its site and Twitter account. The three-time Honolulu Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year averaged 14 points and three rebounds in three games with 11 assists and four steals. She shot 44 percent from the field (16-for-36) and 100 percent from the free-throw line (7-for-7). Molina tallied career-highs of […]
Here’s how I voted in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday. ## Maryknoll Spartans (19-1, 5-0 ILH). Pupule ballot: No. 1 Last week: def. Claremont 54-28; def. @ Punahou 57-30. The skinny: Still unbeaten against Hawaii teams. The biggest differences between Maryknoll, ‘Iolani and Konawaena: A) Maryknoll has beaten ‘Iolani in both games so far, B) Maryknoll and ‘Iolani beat Salesian; Konawaena lost to Salesian by 25 points. ## ‘Iolani Raiders (12-8, 4-2 ILH). Pupule ballot: No. 2 […]
Punahou Co-Athletics Director Kale Ane confirmed today that Liz Kam is no longer the Buffanblu varsity girls basketball coach. Kam resigned over the weekend, just halfway into her second season. “She shared that it was for personal reasons,” Ane texted. “We told her we would respect that.” Punahou was 2-3 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play before Kam stepped down. She has been replaced by Co-Athletics Director Tita Ahuna. Since Mike Taylor resigned in 2011 after four state titles in […]

Here’s how the new Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 looks. Below that, those same teams and more — listed with their positions on my ballot. Pupule’s ballot 1. Maryknoll. Still lots of room for growth. 2. ‘Iolani. Pound for pound, inch for inch, best team. 3. Konawaena. Still talented, but very young. 4. Kamehameha. Close, so close. 5. Punahou. The bar is exceedingly high. 6. Lahainaluna. Sleeper. 7. Hilo. Still steady long after Onaona Miller left for Punahou. 8. Mililani. […]
