Six games in three days, no problem for the Waiakea Warriors. Though other neighbor island teams like Lahainaluna had done this on a regular basis, No. 7-ranked Waiakea adopted this scripted bit of madness for the first time this week. ‘Iolani senior Taylor Wu was selected the most outstanding player of the Sacred Hearts Academy Invitational. Wu averaged 18 points in the three-game format, including 24 points and five steals as No. 1-ranked ‘Iolani outlasted No. 7 Waiakea 66-55 on Friday. Joining Wu on the all-tourney team was teammate Lily Lefotu Wahinekapu, Dallas Martinez of Sacred Hearts, Kaelyn Espinda of Kaimuki, and Waiakea’s Zaelynn Lui-Cabinatan and Kelsey Imai. Kyra Tanabe connected on three treys and finished with 14 points as No. 1 ‘Iolani overwhelmed No. 10 Sacred Hearts 67-33 at Dorothy Macy Gymnasium on Monday night. It was the regular-season opener in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play. Tanabe shot 5-for-6 from the field and picked two steals. It’s far from unanimous, but the ‘Iolani Raiders have plenty of believers statewide. Coaches and media voted ‘Iolani No. 1 in today’s season-opening Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 poll.
