Lasi Tuiolemotu powers Kapolei in playoff win over Kaimuki

By Paul Honda on January 17, 2019

The eye test isn’t everything, but after three quarters, it didn’t seem to make sense that Kapolei was up just six points on Kaimuki. The Hurricanes wore down the Bulldogs in the final quarter, and their 54-36 win means Kapolei is now in the quarterfinal round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I playoffs. Even if they lose to East 1 Kahuku, the ‘Canes would still have a shot at one of the six state-tournament berths available. Kapolei (10-7 overall, […]

Hoopbook: Maryknoll wins tiebreaker draw, OIA playoffs tip

By Paul Honda on January 16, 2019

By the end of this day, four teams will see the end of their basketball season, never to play beyond their Oahu Interscholastic Association schedule again. Meanwhile, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Division I girls playoffs are in motion, at least off the court. Kamehameha and Maryknoll, which finished tied for second place on Tuesday, had a draw on Wednesday afternoon to determine which team will host the tiebreaker game. Maryknoll won the draw and will host Kamehameha […]

Kalina Obrey’s 16/10 powers No. 5 Kamehameha over No. 10 Punahou

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2019

Kalina Obrey powered for 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Noelle Sua-Godinet added 10 points, six boards and three blocks as No. 5 Kamehameha overwhelmed No. 10 Punahou 54-25 on Tuesday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. Kamehameha finished Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season play 7-3 (13-5 overall), two games behind first-place ‘Iolani. With Maryknoll’s win over Sacred Hearts tonight, the Warriors and Spartans will have a tiebreaker playoff game for second place. The top two teams in the ILH will receive […]

‘Iolani a unanimous No. 1 for first time

By Paul Honda on January 14, 2019

The ‘Iolani Raiders don’t flinch. Ranked No. 1 in all seven previous Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 polls this season, ‘Iolani is now a unanimous selection for the first time. The Raiders collected all 10 first-place votes from coaches and media this week. Despite being a season-long No. 1, ‘Iolani (17-6, 8-1 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) was far from a popular top pick twice. In week 1, Konawaena garnered six of the 10 first-place votes, but was outpointed by ‘Iolani. […]

Tatianna Burciaga-Reyes and Kianna Young added nine points each for Punahou (10-4 overall), which improved to 5-4 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Brilie Kovaloff poured in 20 points, and Samantha Makiya and Tylee-Kanani Wong scored 10 points each for Mid-Pacific (4-13, 1-8 ILH). Lum scored off the tip to begin […]

Jalen Tanuvasa and Mahalo Akaka scored 14 points each as No. 4 Maryknoll outlasted No. 3 Kamehameha 62-52 on Saturday afternoon at Clarence T.C. Ching Gym. Aloha Akaka added seven points, eight rebounds and four blocks, and Serenity Moananu tallied 12 points as Maryknoll improved to 7-3 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (18-3 overall). Kalina Obrey poured in 24 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead Kamehameha, which saw its slim chances of catching first-place ‘Iolani diminished. The […]

Waiakea ends Konawaena’s BIIF win streak at 124 games

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2019

The streak is over for the nine-time state champion Konawaena Wildcats. Waiakea put an end to Konawaena’s 124-game win streak in Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball, stifling the Wildcats 54-25 on Thursday night. “It was senior night for our team, too. As coaches, we were definitely excited,” Waiakea coach Brandon Kauhi said. “We had a good defensive game plan and tonight we hit those outside shots.” Waiakea made four treys in the game, three of them before halftime. “That’s […]

Hoopbook: A fine time at the free-throw line

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2019

Kawika Lee scored 16 points against Mid-Pacific, helping ‘Iolani rally from an 11-0 deficit. He knocked down three 3-pointers, but also shot 1-for-5 at the free-throw line. Unless he took 15 3-point attempts, he shot a better percentage under duress from the arc than he did at the foul line. Some shooters are better in motion. Sam Wheeler, in that same game at Mills Gymnasium, shot 7-for-8 from the charity stripe to boost the Raiders. I learned recently that he […]
