Kalani handles BIIF champion Waiakea to reach semis

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2019

Kalani’s 73-57 win over Waiakea on Thursday night wasn’t shocking, but the domination the Lady Falcons demonstrated was. Kalani (21-6) advanced to the semifinal round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships and will meet Kamehameha at Stan Sheriff Center in a showdown between the runners-up from the OIA and ILH, respectively. Waiakea, the BIIF champion, fell behind 9-2 and was never in the game despite a lot of hustle and effort. The Warriors didn’t utilize their tough fullcourt press […]

Hoopbook: Defensive mechanisms; picking a quarterfinal site

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

Offense sells tickets. Defense is appreciated by only a few. When Kamehameha suffocated Mililani in a 41-17 takedown on Monday night, only Warrior fans and, perhaps, the spirit of the first king himself enjoyed the way this team advanced in the state tournament. There were no chants of “Defense!” from the bleachers, and there were no defensive analytics printed out, but the Warriors delivered the basketball equivalent of a no-hitter on Day 1 of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. […]

Patriots-like defense helps Kamehameha oust Mililani

By Paul Honda on February 5, 2019

Retracing the steps of the Kamehameha Warriors also means a venture into the voyage of the Mililani Trojans. It was Mililani that met Kalani last week in the semifinals of the OIA Division I playoffs. Mililani went 10-0 in the West, but wasn’t able to break into the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 until Jan. 21, just days after defeating Moanalua in the OIA quarterfinals. The day after cracking the Top 10, the Trojans gave Kalani a major rub before […]

‘Iolani a unanimous No. 1 as girls basketball state tourney opens

By Paul Honda on February 4, 2019

For an 11th consecutive week, the ‘Iolani Raiders are on the throne with a No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. The champions of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu have a bye as the opening round of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championship tips off this afternoon. ‘Iolani (20-6) will face the Maui-Kaiser winner on Thursday in the quarterfinal round at Moanalua. There were some minor changes, like Waiakea dropping from No. 3 into a tie with […]

Hoopbook: Kamehameha-Mililani opens with elimination match

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

The pairings and bracket for the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships released on Wednesday night are nearly duplicate to last year’s template. The layout posted here at Hawaii Prep World a few days ago had Lahainaluna as the No. 2 seed instead of Waiakea, the most obvious difference. Also, Maui reached the tourney as the MIL’s runner-up instead of King Kekaulike. As always, there’s at least one potential gangbuster in the quarterfinal round. This season, it’s going to […]

Mules, Cougars prepare for inter-island travel

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2019

Life on the road can be fun and it can be frazzled, particularly during the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. The Leilehua Mules learned from a state-tournament trip to the Valley Island in 2017. They flew in on game day and departed that night. In between, they lost a heartbreaker to Kamehameha-Maui, 33-31. A busy school day. A short flight. A long drive Upcountry (Pukalani). A long drive back to the airport. Back on the plane. Then a drive from […]

‘Iolani, Waiakea earn top seeds in girls state basketball

By Billy Hull on January 30, 2019

ILH champion ‘Iolani, which has reigned as the No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 for 10 consecutive weeks, is the top seed in the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. Brackets were released Wednesday with BIIF champion Waiakea seeded No. 2 after ending four-time defending state champion Konawaena’s run of BIIF titles that extended for the last decade. The Warriors will host the winner between Kalani and Radford next Thursday while the Wildcats will host Leilehua in a […]
