St. Joe guard Andrade scores 44 in win

By Jerry Campany on January 13, 2010

By Paul Honda Just a quick note for prep basketball fans about sixth-ranked St. Joseph. The Cardinals got a 44-point performance from swingman Jacob Andrade in a 65-47 win over No. 10 Hilo last night at Afook-Chinen Hilo Civic Auditorium. For fans who saw St. Joe at Moanalua’s Na Menehune Holiday Classic in late December, the concept of one of their players scoring that much is interesting. The Cardinals play very disciplined, smart offense and defense. Conservative would be the […]

Post-game: No. 4 Lady Govs edge No. 8 Rough Riders

By Jerry Campany on January 9, 2010

By Paul Honda Twelve turnovers for Farrington. Twenty-four by Roosevelt. That’s your ballgame, folks. The Rough Riders came to Farrington with a huge opportunity to establish its place in the pecking order of the Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball race. But after all those giveaways, Roosevelt was still in position to tie the game in the final seconds … which is when it became obvious that the Rough Riders are just a wee bit inexperienced in a matchup of elites […]

Kalaheo-Moanalua tonight: Will the horses run?

By Jerry Campany on January 2, 2010

. Editor’s note: Paul Honda’s account of the game can be found at http://www.starbulletin.com/sports/highschool/20100103_moanalua_dominates_kalaheo.html . By Paul Honda If there were ever a time this season, an opportunity for two basketball teams to approach offensive efficiency to the nth power, tonight’s Kalaheo-Moanalua boys matchup might be it. Really? Yeah, really. Though I’d really, really be surprised if either team approach the century mark, it wasn’t that long ago (maybe 25 years?) when Kalaheo and Farrington rewarded fans during another recession-era […]

Moanalua’s Nicolas out 2-3 weeks

By Jerry Campany on December 23, 2009

By Paul Honda Moanalua standout Joanna Nicolas joined the line of injured basketball players last week. Nicolas, a junior guard and focal point of her team’s offense, suffered a partially torn ACL in a regular-season opening win over Kailua. “I’ll be back in two or three weeks,” she said on Monday while attending the ‘Iolani Classic. Moanalua won its opener against Kailua, but has lost to Farrington and Kalani without Nicolas.

Injuries hit ‘Iolani girls, boys

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2009

By Paul Honda It’s still just preseason, but ‘Iolani’s boys and girls basketball teams have already suffered casualties. The girls lost standout guard Kylie Maeda for the season after she suffered an ACL injury to her left knee in the opening seconds of a game during last week’s ‘Iolani Classic girls tourney. The sophomore said she’ll have surgery soon, then have months of rehab work ahead. She expects to be back by next season. The Raider boys lost Kainoa Scheer, […]

‘Tis the season for hoop fanatics

By Jerry Campany on December 17, 2009

By Paul Honda phonda@starbulletin.com My name is Pupule and I am a hoopaholic. All: Hi Pupule. Yeah, there’s still much work to be done with the final fall sport (football all-state voting and photos and yadayada), but this week is finally a time to bathe in the fountain of hoops. Moanalua dominated Kailua on Tuesday night. Watch Joanna Nicolas play the game. She does everything right. Well, almost everything. Give me five Joannas and I’ll give you an OIA Red […]

Road to title still goes through Kona

By Jerry Campany on December 12, 2009

By Paul Honda   From ‘Iolani to Moanalua to Farrington, girls basketball tournaments gave fans lots of action on Friday.  One thing coaches probably will agree on: Konawaena is still the team to beat. The Wildcats improved to 5-1 in nonconference play (5-0 against Hawaii teams) with a 54-42 win over Mid-Pacific at the ‘Iolani Classic.    Konawaena got outstanding team passing, using backdoor cuts, and six 3-point bombs to dismantle the Owls. The ‘Cats led 11-0 and smothered MPI […]
