By Paul Honda on January 20, 2011

. Bad news for the hard-working Maryknoll Spartans: senior guard Ashley Agcaoili is done for the season after suffering a broken finger during a win over Hanalani on Tuesday. Coach Steve Caley said Agcaoili, a returning All-State Fab 15 selection and Team Aloha all-stars player, returned to the game despite the injury. “She’s a tough kid,” he said. Maryknoll (15-3 overall), is 10-2 in Division II of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Agcaoili had surgery on her finger this morning […]

By Paul Honda on January 5, 2011

Sometimes, it happens so quickly, an illegal screen call surprises most fans. It’s only natural when our eyes are fixed on the ball. But here are two examples of moving screens on video. Paul Honda, Star-Advertiser

Well, this is interesting

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2011

Forty-five minutes until the voting deadline, and the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 is in for a very minor change in the big picture. If these numbers hold up, there will be one slightly giddy new team in the Top 10. After two months — the first day of tryouts for girls hoops was Nov. 1 — they might finally crack the poll. Time to add up the Boys Basketball Top 10 votes. Paul Honda, Star-Advertiser

Girls Hoops: MPI vs. Maryknoll correction

By Jerry Campany on January 2, 2011

Wow, this was an ugly typo on my part. In a game story from Friday’s edition, I wrote (somehow) that Mid-Pacific shot “2 percent” in its 45-38 win over Maryknoll for the St. Francis/Merv Lopes Classic girls title. MPI was 18-for-60, which is 30 percent, not 2 percent. The Owls have come a long way since that blowout loss at ‘Iolani last month. When their transition game is flowing, they’re as quick as any team in the state. Paul Honda, […]

The kind of Finals we all like, right?

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2010

My dilemma today is, well, not even a matter of choice. I’m one person. There are two great boys basketball tournaments entering their finals tonight. I can’t clone myself. So there it is. My editor has assigned me to one site and there I will go. If I had to go to the other tourney, it would be the same pain. Can’t be in two places in one time. At least, this side of Star Trek transporters. But the anticipation […]
