Services for the late Bernie Ching will be held May 5-6. Ching, who served as an ‘Iolani coach for 48 years, died April 6 at age 79 Ching coached girls and boys basketball, football and paddling, and he also served as a security guard at the school for 38 years. Bernie Ching, who served as an ‘Iolani coach for 48 years, died Friday morning at Queen’s Medical Center surrounded by his family and close friends, according to a letter sent by head of school Timothy Cottrell to his staff. Ching, who was born Jan. 16, 1939, was 79. Barcoma takes over as Maui baseball coach

Leonard Barcoma Jr. will take over as head coach of the state champion Maui High baseball team, Sabers athletic director Michael Ban announced Wednesday. Barcoma has coached in more than 20 seasons in the Maui Interscholastic League — at Maui High and at Kamehameha-Maui. Tokuda takes over as Leilehua athletic director

Nolan Tokuda was a huge part of the Leilehua football renaissance in the early part of the 2000s, and now he is the school’s athletic director. As the football coach, Tokuda brought the Mules to the Division I state championship game in 2004. 2007 and 2008, and that included a 20-16 victory over Saint Louis for the ’07 title. HHSAA to host statisticians workshop July 29

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association will be presenting a free football statisticians workshop on July 29 from 1-4 p.m. at Kaimuki High School. The workshop will be led by sports information veteran Thomas Yoshida. It is geared to get more trained statisticians in the field. Scorekeepers of the various Hawaii football teams at all levels are welcome to attend. For more information, call 792-3914.
