House bill addresses equality for Hawaii’s high school girl athletes

By Nick Abramo on April 26, 2019

It’s Christmas in April for Hawaii’s high school girl athletes. House bill 1259 SD1 has passed through House and Senate committee and will move on to the full Hawaii House and Senate for a vote sometime next week. The bill includes many capital improvement projects across the state for construction of girls athletic locker rooms. The bill comes five months after a lawsuit was filed by the ACLU, alleging gender-based bias and unequal treatment of female athletes. If the vote […]

ILH rules against curtailing coaching restrictions

By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2019

At their postseason meetings, the ILH basketball and volleyball coaches voted to request the elimination of coaching restrictions. The ILH athletic directors, however, voted to keep the restrictions in place. By rule, ILH coaches are not allowed to coach players from their varsity teams during offseason periods, excluding summer. There is one exception: Varsity coaches who coach a club team can coach up to three of their varsity players on the club team. The state’s other leagues — BIIF, KIF, […]

HMSA donates proven life savers to HHSAA

By Nick Abramo on February 14, 2019

Thirteen years ago, the Hawaii Medical Service Association donated life-saving defibrillators to 95 public and independent schools statewide. They’re doing the same thing this year in collaboration with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. The difference? Lives have been saved with that first batch of donated defibrillators (also known as automated external defebrillators) in 2006, so whatever doubts, if any, about their importance have been completely wiped away. According to the HMSA and HHSAA in a joint news release, “AEDs […]

By Nick Abramo on October 5, 2018

A Hawaii First Circuit Court judge on Tuesday denied a motion by the parents of St. Francis athlete Skylar Kalilikane-McMoore for a preliminary injunction in a football transfer-rule case. Fata McMoore and Starr Kalilikane, the parents of Kalilikane-McMoore (a junior offensive lineman previously declared ineligible under Hawaii High School Athletic Association rules) had filed for the preliminary injunction in their lawsuit against the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association and the Oahu Interscholastic Association in an […]

Saint Louis works on major athletic facility upgrades

By Nick Abramo on September 18, 2018

Gone is Gerber Fieldhouse on the Saint Louis School campus, and it is being replaced by a new sports complex. Groundwork of the final phase of the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center — construction of a new gymnasium — is being done now. According to Glenn Medeiros, the school president, plans were originally drawn up in 2010. However, the work was put on the shelf for a while due to low enrollment. “Enrollment had gone done to about 550 students, […]

Campbell’s Delos Reyes eases into retirement

By Nick Abramo on August 5, 2018

Sam Delos Reyes was not crazily busy Saturday. Not like last year and all those years before. The Campbell Sabers were playing the Hilo Vikings in a season-opening football game, and Delos Reyes was not the man constantly making sure if everything — the whole production — was in order. Those days are gone, and Delos Reyes was relaxed to da max — or at least as much as he could be. He still had a duty to perform, and […]

State football OT is one of many HIADA topics

By Nick Abramo on May 29, 2018

The longest football game in Hawaii high school history has led to a proposal by athletic directors to ensure that there won’t be a repeat performance. Last November at Aloha Stadium, Lahainaluna outlasted Konawaena 75-69 in seven overtime periods to win the state’s Division II championship. It was the main reason why Nov. 18’s Aloha Stadium tripleheader lasted almost 12 hours — from 2 p.m. on a Saturday until 1:04 a.m. Sunday. High school administrators typically want to get their […]
