A huge change will be in the offing if the Hawaii High School Athletic Directors Association adopts a proposal submitted by the HHSAA that would drastically change the seeding criteria that has been used through the years for state tournaments in volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball and baseball. The Hawaii Department of Education has been taking steps to address gender equity in light of a lawsuit filed in December by the ACLU against Campbell High that alleges gender-based bias and unequal treatment of female athletes. House Bill SD1 CD1, which includes athletic funding for high schools, has passed the Legislature and is headed to Gov. David Ige for his signature. Roosevelt will be getting a new gymnasium if the state House and Senate pass a funding bill next week. House Bill 1259 SD1 sets aside $19.5 million for design and construction of a new gymnasium for the Rough Riders with locker rooms classrooms and other related facilities.
