The annual HIADA meeting is June 4-6 at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Lihue. As of now the HHSAA determines its seeding on votes by the sport coordinators from all five leagues. Instead, […]

By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

Three-sport athletes making the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor used to be a common thing. Not so much these days. The Hall of Honor started in 1983 and four times between then and 1999 there were eight or more three-sport athletes inducted. The discrepancy between three-sport athletes and one-sport athletes was wide in the following years: 1985 (8-1), 1987 (7-0), 1989 (6-0), 1991 (9-0), 1993 (9-0), 1994 (7-0), 1995 (7-1) and 1999 (9-0). In 2015, there were […]

Ratio of girls to boys in Hall of Honor has increased through the years

By Nick Abramo on May 18, 2019

It used to be that the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Honor inducted more boys athletes than girls. It’s trending the other way now. A graph put together by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s and Hawaii Prep World’s Jerry Campany illustrates the change. In 1983, the first year of the Hall, there were nine boys athletes and three girls picked in the 12-member class. That’s a long way from from 2018, when the numbers were exactly reversed, with nine girls […]

It all transformed at the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State championships, when Punahou dominated and Baldwin fell. Punahou eliminated Kaiser and Hilo before defeating OIA champion Mililani in the state final to capture its first crown since 2010. Baldwin rallied past Waiakea in the quarterfinals, but fell to Mililani in the semifinals. For the first time since 2015, a team […]
