More on Wagner’s option

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2012

It was past my deadline when one of my favorite coaches in UH football history called back. Bob Wagner, athletic director at Kamehameha-Hawaii, confirmed what I’d heard recently: he’s ready to retire at the end of this academic year. It’s been a decade since he accepted the job and moved to the Big Island. Officially, Coach Wagner will walk away on Aug. 1, ready to relax and do some traveling with his wife. Isn’t that the dream for most people […]

HIADA to honor Awa, Victor

By Jerry Campany on June 1, 2011

A momentus night as the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference begins. Former Kailua softball coach Bernard Victor and current Konawaena girls basketball coach Bobbie Awa will be honored tonight for their service and dedication. I’m sticking around to enjoy the festivities. There are a lot of super people who happen to be great coaches. Coach Bernard and Coach Bobbie are definitely among them. As for the conference, it’s a light year in terms of heavy topics, but there was […]

Not exactly Comic Con

By Paul Honda on May 31, 2011

No, when the athletic directors get together this week at the Ala Moana Hotel, it’s not about Amazing Spiderman #1 or that old Frank Miller Daredevil classic. No, it’s about business. ADs from across the state will gather for the three-day Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association convention to discuss, debate and vote on proposals in just about every sport. They do this every year. The first day, Wednesday, is more about formalities, meeting together and starting committee meetings. From there, […]

End of the road: Kahuku injunction denied

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2010

It’s over. As of 1 p.m. this afternoon, Judge Karl Sakamoto deliberated after 4 1/2 hours of testimony rejected Kahuku’s injunction against the OIA, HHSAA and DOE state superintendent. It wasn’t a shock or even a surprise considering the precedent of ineligiblity-related forfeitures over the years. Still, even Sakamoto and OIA attorney Lyle Hosoda expressed sympathy for the plight of Kahuku’s football players, who were caught in the crossfire when adults on one side (OIA) ruled that adults on the […]

Kahuku vs. OIA: Legal Eagles at work

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2010

It’s Monday morning, I’ve had my oatmeal and banana, and Kahuku’s legal team is filing suit against the OIA, HHSAA and the DOE state superintendent in court. It’s come to this. On one hand, attorney Eric Seitz has said clearly that the intent is mainly to get all parties to sit down and discuss this delicate, complex matter. On the other, the state football tournament is set to begin on Friday and the gears are in motion. Planet tickets. Hotel […]
