OIA passes transfer rule (extended)

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2014

(Here’s the longer version of this morning’s story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) It was months in the works, but the Oahu Interscholastic Association has made it official: transferring student-athletes will have to sit out one year. The vote by OIA principals was 18-0 in favor of the change. Currently, a student-athlete can play immediately at another school once the transfer process, whether by moving into the district or district exception, is complete. The new rule will require all student-athletes to […]

8-man football hits the Big Island

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2014

While the Maui Interscholastic League enters its fourth season of 8-man football — its second year as a championship sport — another league has adopted the game. Ka‘u athletic director Kalei Namohala confirmed that the Big Island Interscholastic Federation is ready to kick off in the sport this fall. Unlike the MIL, there won’t be a full season of experimentation by participating teams — the minimum number of entries necessary to qualify a championship sport. Ka‘u, Kohala and Pahoa will […]

HIADA: Regionals get thumbs up

By Paul Honda on June 9, 2013

This big dance might just be on the neighbor islands. Administrators across the state passed a proposal on Sunday that will send teams across the islands for the first two rounds of the state girls basketball and boys volleyball championships. The proposal was one of several that made it out of committee and to the general assembly of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference at Ala Moana Hotel. Most of the remaining proposals involved rule changes, leaving the regionals […]

The Big What If: Football and HHSAA

By Paul Honda on June 14, 2012

So, it’s been a couple of days since the HHSAA executive board met and voted on the proposals/recommendations that were launched out of HIADA. For the most part, the HHSAA board approved HIADA’s recommendations. But I can’t help wondering this: with the ILH abstaining from voting on Tuesday — its league president missed another board meeting and there was, technically, no next-in-line proxy present — what would’ve happened if the MIL’s proposal (at HIADA) had been on the HHSAA table? […]

Here are the recommendations from the athletic directors’ conference on Kauai. The conference began on Thursday, ended Saturday and resulted in the following approved proposals. The proposals went up for HHSAA executive board voting on Tuesday morning at the OIA office, located at Radford High School. Notebook, HIADA day 2 and 3

By Paul Honda on June 10, 2012

(Some notes from days 2 and 3 of HIADA. Kahuku football and wrestling coach Reggie Torres on the second day of HIADA. Ran out of space in Saturday’s print edition.) Torres, Kahuku’s football coach, acknowledged the edge. “If you can get it, the bye helps, especially near the end of the season after you played physical teams like Farrington and Leilehua,” said Torres, who guided the Red Raiders to a state title last season. “Kids always want more games, but […]

HIADA, more from day one

By Jerry Campany on June 8, 2012

(More from the first day of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. Story is in this morning’s edition, just adding some extra info.) HHSAA wrestling official Keith Matsumoto points to Hawaii teams in 1999 and ’02 as sterling examples. “Between those two teams, those girls, we literally could’ve had an opportunity to have four out of four girls in the Olympics from Hawaii. That was my dream. The girls we had were good enough to represent the women’s team […]
