Hawaii athletic directors converge on Big Isle

Hawaii’s high school athletic directors are at the Hilton Waikoloa Village this week on the Big Island. They will discuss proposals initiated by the state’s five sports leagues and vote on possible changes. Not too many noteworthy items are on the agenda for the 55th annual Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference that runs through Wednesday. Brian Bosworth to speak at HIADA

Former Oklahoma and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth is on the agenda to be a guest speaker at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Tuesday. Bosworth, who fans called “The Boz,” was well known for his radical hairstyles and controversial comments about the NCAA. Track athlete Tyler Ho and judoka and wrestler Czarina Pineda-Abaya are Kalani’s male and female athletes of the year, athletic director Gregory Van Cantfort announced on Tuesday. Botelho retiring as ILH executive director

Don Botelho is retiring from his post as ILH executive director, according to an email from league board chair Suzy Travis to the ILH principals, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser learned Wednesday. Botelho took over the top spot in the league in 2003. Botelho will be around the league offices to mentor his replacement. The replacement is not known at this time. “Don Botelho is transitioning from his post as ILH executive director,” Travis, the Assets School principal, wrote in the email. […]

Lavatai is Radford’s athlete of the year

Izaiah Lavatai, a three-sport star, was picked as Radford’s male athlete of the year, athletic director Kelly Sur announced Monday. Lavatai played football and basketball and was on the track and field team for the Rams. Volleyball player and track athlete Carlyann Butz and track athlete and cheerleader Talia Webster were chosen as the school’s female athletes of the year. Two boys and two girls were chosen as Moanalua’s outstanding athletes of 2014-15. Volleyball and football player Karson Cruz and judoka and wrestler Zorich Palimo‘o earned awards as Na Menehune’s outstanding male athletes.
