Coaches roundup: Leoni returns to Kalaheo

Sivan Leoni is returning to coach Kalaheo boys volleyball, Mustangs athletic director Mark Brilhante told Hawaii Prep World on Wednesday. Leoni, a native of Isreal, was a standout with the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team from 1995 to 1998. He was also the Mustangs’ head coach from 2000 to 2005, leading them to OIA championships in 2004 and 2005. Sumstine looks to train more FB officials

Matt Sumstine, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s football officials coordinator, is recruiting officials for next season and beyond. “I am constantly looking for new talent to replace some of our retiring officials and allow for healthy competition in the selection process to work in the state championship tournament,” Sumstine texted Hawaii Prep World on Tuesday. Bryan Almadova is the acting athletic director at Kaiser High School while Rodney Iwasaki is away on medical leave, according to school principal Justin Mew. Almadova is a teacher at the school. In other athletic administration news, University hired Jay Inouye as its new boys volleyball coach, according to Junior Rainbows athletic director Hoku Haliniak. As the years go by, Mid-Pacific has steadily moved ahead in forming its own athletic teams rather than have its athletes be part of the Pac-Five conglomerate. Paola is new associate AD at Kamehameha

Ed Paola is a new associate athletic director at Kamehameha. “He is a real good fit for us,” Warriors athletic director Glennie Adams said. “He has a wealth of experience in athletic administration. He’s personable and works well with our coaches, parents and student-athletes.” Paola is one of two Kamehameha associate ADs. The other is Bob Benham.
