By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2016

Hawaii football teams will not be holding spring football practices in pads this year, a departure from past seasons when a period of time was set aside for that purpose. The reason for the change for the Oahu Interscholastic Association and the the three Neighbor Islands leagues (Kauai Interscholastic Federation, Big Island Interscholastic Federation Maui Interscholastic League) is a new rule passed by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board at its last meeting earlier this month. The rule […]

Coaches chime in on Okimoto’s suggestion

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2016

Twenty years since he first began coaching at his alma mater, Randall Okimoto has proven to be a speak softly kind of guy. That’s always intriguing considering he was a record-setting running back at Farrington who went on to play at the University of Hawaii, where he earned his degree. “I knew from the start of my college career I wanted to be an educator. And the only place I wanted to be at that time was here at Farrington […]

Chantilly Pratt-Maiava is the new Kailua girls volleyball coach, according to Surfriders athletic director Ramona Takahashi. She is a volleyball lifer, having played since the age of 3. Pratt-Maiava went on to play for McKinley before transferring to Kaimuki, where she graduated from in 2000, and eventually played […]

By Jerry Campany on April 1, 2016

Before the state’s decision makers get down to serious business at the Hawaii Athletic Directors Association meeting at Hilton Waikoloa Village in June, they hope to see some of the athletes they are working for getting their own development. The HHSAA is looking for the state’s best and brightest to attend its first Student-Athlete Leadership Conference June 6-7 in Kona. HIADA sessions will be going on at the same time, but the real business doesn’t begin until later in the […]

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2016

Abu Maafala told Hawaii Prep World on Monday that he is a candidate for the Kamehameha football head coaching job. Maafala is a former standout defensive lineman for Kamehameha and Cal. “I have not heard anything officially,” Maafala said. “They (the Warriors administration) said they will be in contact and let me know either way.” Multiple trusted sources close to Kamehameha believe Maafala is going to be named as head coach, but that could not be confirmed. A call and […]

Kahuku’s Akina addresses suspension

By Nick Abramo on January 6, 2016

Alan Akina tells his side of the story concerning his suspension as coach of the Kahuku basketball team on a Facebook post from Jan. 1. On Dec. 29, Hawaii Prep World learned of Akina’s suspension, which occurred apparently for alleged favoritism toward his two sons, Keanu Akina and Kawika Akina. Hawaii Prep World realizes the Department of Education and the Kahuku administration may have had valid reasons for the suspension, so we would welcome and publish any statement from either […]
