The Priory’s Jones is a born leader

By Nick Abramo on June 14, 2017

Jordan Jones laughed if off, but didn’t slough it off as impossible. At the end of a seven-minute interview, The Priory’s Jones — who is the president of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Student Advisory Committee — was reminded that the U.S. has never had a woman president. Of course, Jones is already aware of that fact, and while she was laughing she said, “I would love to be one day.” It is not an immediate goal, if a […]

By Paul Honda on March 11, 2017

In a world where so many high school student-athletes and college students show a deep interest in becoming athletic trainers, this event at Kapiolani Park on Sunday might be the place to be. By Nick Abramo on January 28, 2017

Funny how things happen when you’re on the Hawaii Prep World trail. After being assigned duties away from the high school beat for a few months, the first assignment back was the OIA swimming and diving championships at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Complex in Waipio on Saturday. Before going, it was time to check the internet to see which of the OIA athletic directors is in charge of that event. Turns out, Bryan Almadova was the person listed as the OIA […]

On Monday, seeding and pairings for the new-look First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championships were released, and after less than 24 hours, public response has been varied, to say the least. The first year of this pilot program — expanding from two levels, Divisions I and II, to three (adding Open Division) will take time for fans, coaches, players, administrators to digest. […]

Ane: ‘Very appreciative’ of new format

By Paul Honda on August 24, 2016

With the Interscholastic League of Honolulu having much to gain with the recent format change to the state football tournaments, it’s no surprise that Punahou coach Kale Ane is pleased. The longtime coach and assistant athletic director found out about the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s decision after Punahou’s late-afternoon practice on Monday. “Great news for all of us. Very appreciative to those who got this done,” Ane texted. “Looking forward to an exciting year and an exciting finish.” Punahou […]

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2016

(Update 8 p.m. — Adds comments by Cal Lee.) Response to the news that the change to the state football tournament format — to take effect immediately — was slow this afternoon. A Star-Advertiser breaking news story shared the announcement by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association that the state tournament format would be altered as soon as this season. Open Division would be comprised of four OIA teams and two ILH squads. There would still be Division I and […]
