Anuenue forfeits OIA D-II opener

By Billy Hull on August 13, 2015

Two days before its scheduled Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II opener, Anuenue has elected to forfeit its Saturday game against Radford at Kaiser Stadium. Rams head coach Fred Salanoa was notified of the decision on Thursday. Harold Tanaka, the OIA football coordinator, and Anuenue coach Keli‘i Pio Adams confirmed it. “We’re trying to be optimistic,” Adams said. “We have 23 players and six have been injured since the St. Francis game (a 62-0 loss last Friday. The doctors say that […]

8 is enough (extended)

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2014

(Here’s the longer version of the story that was published in this morning’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Game video highlights from the MIL and BIIF by Sports Viz and Cyrus Perry are posted below.) Thirty-one is a good number. Fifteen is certainly not, not in football. More than a year ago, Laurie Koustik had a complex issue to deal with. Her 11-man football team at Kohala, where she is the athletic director, was wobbly again. Forty-one student-athletes had signed up for football […]

Anuenue football moving forward

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2014

As of Wednesday morning, the sturdy Na Koa of Anuenue are hanging tough. Despite suiting up just 16 players against Kaimuki on Saturday, Anuenue is continuing on with its football season. Na Koa will play Kalani on Friday. “We don’t really have a (roster) number,” OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka said of minimum requirements. In years past, any roster number in the low 20s would draw very close attention from league officials. Anuenue is the smallest school participating in OIA […]

Anuenue fights to keep program alive

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2014

Decision day was last Monday for the Anuenue football program. Head coach Kelii Pio Adams and his staff got together with the players and had an honest talk about the future of the program. They would only have 16 players available for Saturday’s scheduled game against Kaimuki. Everybody was going to have to play two ways. Everyone was going to be dog tired by the middle of the fourth quarter. Injuries were a real concern. No matter, the kids just […]

Waialua’s turnaround since the start of the season has been remarkable. Anuenue, after many years as a very competitive Division II program, has struggled mightily this season.

Anuenue may test 8-man waters

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2013

There are programs that flourish with numbers, and there are programs that are simply small. Anuenue falls in the latter category. Na Koa is nearing the end of their seventh season of varsity football and it has been their most difficult. They fielded a hardy group of 18 to 20 players most of the way, though they had 24 on the gridiron in Saturday’s game against Kalani. In previous years, Anuenue had many players with experience. This year, they had […]

Video: Kalani vs. Anuenue

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2013

Normally, Kalani-Anuenue is a competitive football game. Timing has changed, however. Kalani continues to progress and is on an upward thrust to success with a prolific passing attack. Anuenue hasn’t been its usual self this fall, not with the graduation of many seniors. Even with its small enrollment, Anuenue had produced some of the state’s top rushers each year. This is not one of those years. Na Koa are young and building. They suited up 18 in this game. Eighteen […]
