Inexperience not a problem for Aiea

By Paul Honda on August 13, 2016

Down two starting wide receivers and a starting quarterback, Aiea coach Wendell Say never had a doubt. All he knew was that his inexperienced skill-position guys had what it took, even in the heat of an early-evening battle in the center of Nanakuli Valley. Aiea withstood the Golden Hawks’ early momentum, then fought off a furious rally and returned home with a precious 27-14 victory to start the OIA Division I football season on Friday night. With Kobe Kato sitting […]

Aiea head coach Say ready to start 25th season

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2016

Wendell Say will start his 25th season as Aiea’s head football coach on Friday as Na Alii visits Nanakuli (0-1). It’s been a long ride at Aiea for Say, who began with the school as an assistant in 1980. He was two years out of Linfield College, where he played football, when his friend, Marco Min, told him there was a job opening on Na Alii staff. I interviewed with Ray Higa, the head coach at the time, and he […]

Coaches chime in on Okimoto’s suggestion

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2016

Twenty years since he first began coaching at his alma mater, Randall Okimoto has proven to be a speak softly kind of guy. That’s always intriguing considering he was a record-setting running back at Farrington who went on to play at the University of Hawaii, where he earned his degree. “I knew from the start of my college career I wanted to be an educator. And the only place I wanted to be at that time was here at Farrington […]

Aiea’s Kuia recognized as school record holder

By Billy Hull on September 23, 2015

For two days, Aiea senior Kobe Kato was thought to be the single-game record holder for Na Alii in passing after his 394-yard performance in a 46-30 loss to Campbell on Saturday. It got the attention of a reader who remembered Kali Kuia, who quarterbacked Aiea from 2003 to ’05, throwing for more than 400 yards in a game. Turns out, the reader was right. There was a discrepancy in stats listed in both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin […]

Say, Okimoto square off in Round 3

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Aiea coach Wendell Say and Farrington coach Randall Okimoto have been big names on the Hawaii coaching scene for so long, how is it possible that they have met on the field only twice? Say, the dean of OIA coaches, and Okimoto will face off for the third time in their careers on Friday. Say has been the head coach at Aiea since 1997 and Okimoto has run the Governors since 2000. It doesn’t portend good things for Say, whose […]

Memorable birthday for Aiea’s Kealoha-Cambe

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 15, 2015

A few minutes before midnight Friday, the Aiea football team broke its postgame huddle by singing “Happy Birthday” in honor of Na Alii senior Pohaku Kealoha-Cambe. Before the serenade, the senior receiver celebrated four touchdown catches, including the decisive score in Aiea’s 47-43 shootout victory over Kaiser to open the regular season. “I couldn’t imagine anything better,” Kealoha-Cambe said after a dizzying game that featured seven lead changes. Kealoha-Cambe finished the night with six catches for 148 yards and four […]
