OIA rivals Aiea and Radford are in ‘same league’

By Nick Abramo on August 26, 2017

The two schools are 2.5 miles apart and show quite similar numbers on the Hawaii high school football Richter scale. In other words, Aiea and Radford are in the same league — literally and figuratively. Yes, they play against each other in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, but they are also comparable in the size and scope of their football programs. Yet another way to put it: They belong on the same field and should probably be in the middle tier […]

Silva restoring Tigers pride; Say starts 27th season

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2017

On one side of the triangular matchup at the McKinley field last Saturday, you had a program having trouble putting enough players in uniform to participate. And no, it wasn’t the McKinley Tigers. It was the Kaiser Cougars, who have taken the mantle from the Tigers as the team that could forfeit games on a week by week basis. But it wasn’t so long ago that McKinley was in that exact same predicament. Before them, it was Anuenue, a school […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

Aiea’s Say aims for players to meet their potential

By Nick Abramo on October 12, 2016

You couldn’t help but notice a twinge of disappointment in the eyes of Wendell Say after a first-round Oahu Interscholastic Association football first-round playoff loss last weekend. You see, those same eyes before the game were probably glinting with the wonderful possibilities of what could actually happen with a win. “The hardest part is getting the kids to reach their potential,” said Say, who knows a thing or two about coaching football. He just finished his 26th season as Na […]
