GLORY DAYS: Coach Wendell Say and the 2019 Aiea Na Alii

By Nick Abramo on July 11, 2019

16TH IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Aiea Na Alii

By Billy Hull on October 19, 2018

Win-loss records say that Aiea Na Alii has been pretty much the same team the past three years, but a deeper dive into the numbers suggest that the 2018 crew was so much better than the previous one. Na Alii went 2-6-1 this year and 2-6 in 2017, but improved its points per game by more than five (19.8 from 14.3). Their points allowed per game dropped by more than a touchdown (26.9 from 35.5). The offensive output represents Wendell […]

Did you hear? Say and Look go head to head

By Nick Abramo on October 14, 2018

There’s something endearing about the two coaching Wendells in Hawaii high school football. They’ve been around for a long while and are among the most respected guys in the coaching fraternity here. Their teams hardly ever play against each other, but they did Friday night. We’re talking about Wendell Look of ‘Iolani and Wendell Say of Aiea, who took their teams out onto Na Alii’s rainy, puddled field for a regular-season finale. And, despite the 30-3 final score, it was […]

Aiea hangs tough against Leilehua

By Jeremy Nitta on September 22, 2018

After seeing their homecoming ruined by a 40-21 loss at the hands of Leilehua, it would seem easy for the Aiea football team to sulk, or get down on themselves. Instead, Na Alii finds themselves trying to embrace the positive outcomes and potential that was shown in the loss. “Leilehua almost beat Moanalua last week, and the week before, we played Moanalua pretty tough,” head coach Wendell Say said. Even with the perennial powerhouses of OIA football like Kahuku and […]
