By Paul Honda on August 14, 2021

There are doubters, for sure, but imagine that the HHSAA executive board’s vote and plan to have full fall, winter and spring sports seasons materializes. For that, there are believers. Optimists. “It makes me really happy, just knowing I get to play one last time for my senior is amazing. I am not surprised that because my athletic director and principal want a season for us because we missed so much. They always will do everything they can to make […]

High school football for the holidays — it’s coming. The HHSAA announced on Friday that its executive board, representing the state’s five leagues, voted unanimously to have a full sports calendar. That means fall sports, including football, will play out a normal schedule once the currently postponed start date of Sept. 24 arrives. The hope is that all student-athletes will be vaccinated by then. “It is a testament to our members to be able to agree to a calendar on […]

By Paul Honda on August 12, 2021

Coaches and players are cautiously optimistic about the HHSAA’s recommendation that state championships be played this fall sports season. The state’s four leagues controlled by the DOE will vote by Friday to follow the plan, or reject the possibility of state tournaments. There has not been a state tournament since the winter season of 2020, 18 months ago. Kahuku football coach Sterling Carvalho is confident that the recommendation will be accepted. “This does not surprise me. If the DOE and […]

The Oahu Interscholastic Association is pushing the start of fall sports back to late September. The official press release is expected by 11 a.m. today, but three administrative sources confirmed the OIA will take action. All fall sports practices are cancelled until further notice. The rising rate of COVID-19 cases, spurred by the Delta variant during the pandemic, is the cause for concern. Preseason games were scheduled to begin on Friday. The OIA’s regular season was slated to start on […]

By Paul Honda on May 14, 2021

It won’t be awhile before Maryknoll seriously considers a move to the upper echelon of ILH girls volleyball. Maybe a year. Maybe more. Maybe less. After sweeping Hawaii Baptist in two sets, 25-20, 25-19, to win the ILH Division II championship on Thursday, it is quite possible that the Spartans program is destined to move on up. “I say it’s too early to expect anything. We just want to keep working on our system. We don’t feel we’ve gotten to […]
