OIA volleyball playoffs start Wednesday

By Billy Hull on October 5, 2018

The OIA girls volleyball playoffs in Division and Division II begin Wednesday. Moanalua, which has won three of the last four league titles in Division I, plays the Waianae/Kalaheo winner on Thursday at Mililani. Kahuku, which won the title in 2016, opens with the Nanakuli/Roosevelt winner on Thursday on the North Shore. Mililani, the last OIA West team to win the league title and the only undefeated team in the tournament, opens with a home match on Thursday against the […]

Another Fonoimoana-Vaomu powers Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on October 4, 2018

Anybody who watches the Kahuku football team is aware of two Red Raiders defenders with the last name Fonoimoana-Vaomu. They are brothers — Alex Fonoimoana-Vaomu, a junior defensive back, and Aaron Fonoimoana-Vaomu, a junior linebacker. And Red Raider nation has another heavy but lesser known “hitter” in Makayla Fonoimoana-Vaomu, their sister. She is a freshman on the girls volleyball team, and she had a team-high eight kills to lead Kahuku to a 25-15, 25-23 victory over Farrington on senior night […]

Kahuku, Farrington to decide OIA East champion

By Billy Hull on October 3, 2018

The girls volleyball regular season in the OIA East has only one game remaining before the playoffs — and it’s a big one. In a game rescheduled because of weather, Kahuku will host Farrington on Thursday night with the top seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs on the line. Kahuku swept Kaiser while Farrington swept Kalani on Wednesday night to remain tied in the standings at 9-1 overall. Both teams’ only loss was against Moanalua, which closed its regular […]

Damien blows away 2-time defending D-II state champs

By Paul Honda on October 2, 2018

The heat of the moment didn’t bother the ninth-ranked Damien Monarchs. Rankings, playing on the road in a loud gym, no problem. The Monarchs’ attack caused disruptions for two-time defending Division II state champion — and sixth-ranked — Le Jardin, and Shelby Capllonch led the way with 16 kills in a 25-15, 29-27 sweep on Tuesday. The hot, humid conditions were perfect for the visiting Monarchs, who hit .333. Middle Ilana Sagapolutele was timely with her five kills, and setters […]

Moanalua surges in girls volleyball rankings

By Billy Hull on October 1, 2018

In control of its own destiny in the OIA East heading into tonight’s match at Roosevelt (moved from Moanalua due to electrical issues), Moanalua climbs two spots in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 this week. Na Menehune jumps past Damien and Kahuku into eight place after an impressive three-set victory over Farrington and a sweep of Kalani last week. Moanalua handed the Governors their first loss in OIA play, winning the third set 15-9 to take over the […]

King Kekaulike reaches new heights

By Billy Hull on September 24, 2018

Voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 remain pretty convinced nationally ranked Kamehameha and ‘Iolani will meet again in the Division I state final. But if there was a team to somehow play spoiler, King Kekaulike is the squad voters are looking at. Kamehameha, the unanimous No. 1 selection, and ‘Iolani, which received all 10 second-place votes, remain firmly at the top of the rankings this week. King Kekaulike, however, makes the jump to No. 3, passing Punahou […]

3 close sets all go No. 1 Kamehameha’s way vs. No. 2 ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on September 20, 2018

What a treat girls volleyball fans got Thursday night at Kekuhaupio Gym. No. 1 Kamehameha got past No. 2 ‘Iolani in three sets, but it was no blowout. All pieces of the game were there for both squads: in-system offense, tight defense with spectacular digs, fine middle hitting and blocking, tenacious outside hitting, smooth setting. And the difference was seven points — three in the first set and two each in the second and third. Another difference between the two […]

Kahuku’s Tevaga glad to be coaching Red Raiders

By Nick Abramo on September 19, 2018

Kahuku was looking for a girls volleyball coach after last season, and they didn’t go very far to find one. They got Michelle Tuli Tevaga, known to many by what she went by during her 2002 state player of the year season for the Red Raiders before going on to star at Fresno State — Tuli Peters. Peters’ Kahuku girls hit some bumps, but got past Roosevelt 25-20, 25-18 in an OIA match Wednesday night at the Rough Riders’ gym. […]
