Q&A: Damien standout Shelby Capllonch

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2018

For today’s full-page feature on Damien’s Shelby Capllonch, click here. ———— The sound is all that is required. When Shelby Capllonch puts the force of her power into a volleyball — left side, right side or back row — there is a sound that is unlike most on the volleyball court. It has the vibe of McKenna Granato (Punahou/Hawaii) and Gabriella Matautia (Moanalua/Temple). Damien is having its finest girls volleyball season ever, and at 13-0, Capllonch (pronounced cap-ee-on) is the […]

OIA volleyball semifinals are ‘epic’

By Nick Abramo on October 16, 2018

Every so often, the editors in the office tune in to a TV broadcast of a game a reporter is covering. They’re usually wrapped up in putting the paper out and checking the TV only to see how close the game is to being over so they know when they can expect a story to be filed. But on Monday night, the editors were wrapped up in the drama of the OIA girls volleyball semifinals. After the first semifinal match […]

Ikenaga shines in Moanalua’s 5-set war

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2018

If 5-foot-5 outside hitters are too small to be high school volleyball superstars, then Tayli Ikenaga will have to grow some more. But she played like one all over the court for No. 10 Moanalua on Thursday night in a five-set OIA quarterfinal victory over Waianae. Ikenaga, a sophomore weighing 120 pounds, lit up the Mililani gym with 27 digs along with her 24 kills that were courtesy of setters Aaliyah Allagonez and Allexis Iramina. “I’m not 5-foot-8 like it […]

Patient Kamehameha sweeps ‘Iolani to close in on ILH title

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2018

So much depth. So much skill. So dominant. The Kamehameha Warriors are resilient, too. Five Warriors tallied at least five kills, led by Keonilei Akana’s 18, in a 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of No. 2 ‘Iolani on Thursday night. The win leaves the Warriors (12-0) with a 2-0 record in the ILH double-elimination tournament. ‘Iolani will square off with Punahou on Saturday. An ‘Iolani win seals at least second place in the tourney, and would earn the Raiders the league’s […]

VIDEO: Elena Oglivie leads ‘Iolani over Punahou

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2018

With 17 kills and a block, junior outside hitter Elena Oglivie lifted No. 2 ‘Iolani over No. 5 Punahou 25-14, 25-23, 25-14 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the ILH double-elimination girls volleyball tournament. Oglivie, the 2016 Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year, chatted after the match.

Dedicated defense lifts ‘Iolani over Punahou

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2018

This could’ve been a serious trap. The ‘Iolani Raiders are No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. Hearts set on a run to the ILH and state finals. Clearly and definitively one of the two best teams in the islands. Chasing Kamehameha. A Tuesday-night trip to Hemmeter Fieldhouse at Punahou easily could have been a trap match. Instead, the visiting Raiders stormed through the gates and withstood Punahou’s best run, during the second set, for a 25-14, 25-23, […]
