By Nick Abramo on October 18, 2018

Rising up and beating the favored team in two straight matches is a rare feat in any sport and at any level. Mid-Pacific did it this week, beating Damien on Tuesday and Thursday nights to wrest away the ILH Division II girls volleyball championship from what appeared to be a tight grip by the previously undefeated Monarchs’ hands. On Thursday night in front of a rambunctious home crowd at the Damien gym, Mid-Pacific scored the knockout blow with a 21-25, […]

Depth, defense spark Kamehameha in epic win over ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2018

On Tuesday, ‘Iolani played lights-out volleyball in a five-set win over previously unbeaten Kamehameha. Epic? Certainly for outside hitter Elena Oglivie, who had 31 kills and only two hitting errors in 72 swings. With the second-round title in the ILH at stake on Thursday, could the Raiders’ junior pull of another miraculous performance? She showed no ill effects 48 hours after the upset win. It was an 8-5 Kamehameha lead when she executed her first kill. From there, she finished […]

Island Pacific enjoys volleyball success

By Nick Abramo on October 18, 2018

It was a banner year for the Island Pacific Academy girls volleyball team. The Navigators under coach Stan Vincent won the ILH Division III championship for the third time. By doing that, they qualified for a play-in game for the league’s D-II tournament. Even though IPA lost that play-in game to La Pietra in three sets, the Navigators finished 11-1. “We still had a fantastic season,” Vincent said. “I have been coaching for over 40 years, 12 at IPA, and […]

Mililani makes it 3 OIA titles in last 8 years

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2018

It was uproarious — and fun — mayhem from the fans Wednesday night at the McKinley gym. It was a Mililani vs. Kahuku fight for the OIA girls volleyball championship, and those in attendance were going to whoop it up no matter what. They did just that, and they did it loudly for what turned out to be a shorter than expected match. It would not have been a surprise to see it go five sets, but Mililani had other […]

By Nick Abramo on October 17, 2018

Kaiser athletics has had its share of controversy in the past few years. But the bad mojo is fading away. No. 2 ‘Iolani finally gets the best of No. 1 Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2018

In the big picture, the Goliath that is Kamehameha’s girls volleyball program has felt the sting of defeat only rarely. And often enough, the Warriors responded with a renewed energy, the kind that they witnessed from ‘Iolani on Tuesday night. Unbeaten, top-ranked Kamehameha seemingly had another ILH championship wrapped up after two sets, and then the visiting, No. 2-ranked Raiders played lights-out for a stunning 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-11 win at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. Elena Oglivie was spectacular from every […]

Thursday’s ILH Division II championship volleyball match between Damien and Mid-Pacific has been four years in the making. The Owls swept the Monarchs 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday to force the deciding match at 6 p.m. at Damien’s gym, and one of them is assured of winning its first-ever ILH crown and the seeded state berth that comes with it. But positioning at states can wait, both teams want the gold now. “For us the seeding doesn’t matter more than […]
