By Billy Hull on October 29, 2018

State champion ‘Iolani and state runner-up Kamehameha finished in the top two spots in the final Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 released today. The Warriors had been No. 1 and ‘Iolani No. 2 every week of the season until the Raiders’ sweep in Saturday’s state championship match. ‘Iolani junior Elena Oglivie, the tournament’s most outstanding player, had a record 28 kills in a D-I state final and finished the tournament with 80 kills, 45 digs, seven block assists and […]

‘Iolani, Sacred Hearts finish off volleyball shockers

By Nick Abramo on October 27, 2018

Underdogs ‘Iolani and Sacred Hearts gave the volleyball favorites a Halloween-time trick Saturday night at the Blaisdell Arena. It was spook-tacular for the Division I and II losers, Kamehameha and Le Jardin. In the second match of the night, the second-ranked Raiders took down top-seeded Kamehameha in three sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18. A microcosmic analogy would be of a left-side hitter winding up seven times on the same rally and getting roofed five times and dug up once before the […]

‘Iolani seeks some 2016 pizzazz in state final

By Nick Abramo on October 26, 2018

‘Iolani is certainly an underdog in tonight’s Division I finale against Kamehameha in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships. The Raiders (12-5) are 1-4 against the Warriors (14-1) this season, and ‘Iolani also lost to them in three sets in the state final a year ago. But the Raiders do have a few things going for them in Saturday’s matchup at 7 p.m. at Blaisdell Arena. They have Elena Oglivie, who, without taking out a radar gun, appears […]

What have we learned: time for volleyball Sweet 16s?

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2018

What have we learned about girls volleyball in 2018? So far, we already knew that the sport as a whole across the state is down a tad bit. KS-Maui was once the optimum program in the MIL, but finished 7-5. Talent seems to have matriculated to King Kekaulike, which was unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 without having beaten a single ranked team all season. King Kekaulike lost to ILH runner-up ‘Iolani — ranked No. 2 […]

King Kekaulike keeps on knocking, but ‘Iolani advances

By Nick Abramo on October 26, 2018

Coach Al Paschoal comes to Oahu for the state championships every year with his King Kekaulike team. Even though it’s usually one and done in the championship bracket, his girls remain upbeat. On Thursday night, Na Alii lost in four sets — 25-18, 22-25, 25-12, 25-8 — to ‘Iolani in the Division I quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships at Moanalua. While the Raiders will be trying to get to the final in a semifinal matchup […]

Petticord’s defense is D-I level for ‘Iolani

By Nick Abramo on October 22, 2018

Sasha Petticord is a skillful volleyball player who will likely be playing at a Division I college next year. Firing away for kills and diving for digs is only part of the equation for her, though. She is the girl up front and in the middle for the second-ranked ‘Iolani Raiders and she is defensive-minded. Sure, the blocks and kills come for points, but that’s not her forte. At 6-foot-2, Petticord is in the way of opposing hitters. She was […]

By Billy Hull on October 22, 2018

After handing Kamehameha-Hawaii its first loss of the season in the BIIF championship game, the Hilo Vikings will enter the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships as the No. 6-ranked team in the state according to the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. The Vikings are two spots ahead of the Warriors, who dropped to No. 8 following the four-set loss.
