San Francisco 49ers lineman DeForest Buckner continues to give back to Waianae

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2019

DeForest Buckner didn’t attend Waianae High, but he is a Waianae boy and he cares deeply about his roots. Buckner, the former Punahou and Oregon football star and now a defensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, made good on his pledge of $10,000 in Nike athletic apparel to the Waianae volleyball teams. The teams received the goods last month at the school gym from Buckner’s mom Maria Toilolo-Buckner, who lives in Waianae with husband George Buckner. DeForest Buckner made […]

Energetic, veteran Mililani volleyball team off to 4-0 start

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2019

Three people were asked if Falanika Danielson has improved over a year ago. All three said yes. Now a senior, Danielson — a 5-foot-6 Mililani outside hitter who finished No. 7 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State Girls Volleyball Fab 15 a year ago — was one of those asked. Here’s her first-hand account: “I believe I did improve, especially on different shots and my vertical and me being able to see the block and what’s open. I’ve also been improving […]

Le Jardin takes set off No. 2 Kamehameha as new ILH girls volleyball format gets underway

By Nick Abramo on August 27, 2019

Using Kamehameha’s three-set victory over Le Jardin on Tuesday night as a small sample, the ILH’s new girls volleyball format is already a success. For years, some of the league’s D-II programs have consistently been in the Top 10 statewide, but instead of competing at the league or state level with the big girls in D-I, these smaller enrollment schools could only go as far as the D-II state title. Not any more. A compromise of sorts was struck in […]

By Billy Hull on August 26, 2019

They’ve won two of the last three Division I state championships and return two-time All-State player of the year Elena Oglivie. So it’s no surprise that the ‘Iolani Raiders are ranked No. 1 in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 entering tonight’s ILH regular-season opener against Mid-Pacific. ‘Iolani is not unanimous, however. Reigning ILH champion and state runner-up Kamehameha received a first-place vote and is No. 2 to start the season. The ILH holds the top three spots […]

‘Iolani falls short of three-peat at Ann Kang Invitational

By Jerry Campany on August 10, 2019

‘Iolani fell short of winning its third straight Ann Kang Invitational championship on Saturday. The defending state champion Raiders went unbeaten in pool play on the first two days, not dropping a single set, before falling on Saturday. The magic ‘Iolani had on Thursday and Friday didn’t carry over, though. The Raiders were swept by Redondo Union (Calif.) 25-19, 25-16 to finish pool play and then fell to Byron Nelson (Texas) 25-22, 26-24 in the semifinals. Redondo Union (Calif.) swept […]
