Q&A: Kamehameha coach Chris Blake on Durango Classic, ILH 2nd round

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2019

More than a decade has passed since the Kamehameha Warriors first played in the Durango Classic. Mid-season travel to Nevada. Disruption of class attendance. Returning to the islands with some jet lag, fatigue and within 48 hours, a key ILH match. Coach Chris Blake wouldn’t have it any other way. The Warriors placed 10th in the 64-team field in Las Vegas. There were plenty of study halls guided by Blake, a longtime teacher at the school. There was rest time, […]

No. 5 Moanalua loses Tayli Ikenaga to injury but remains undefeated

By Nick Abramo on September 17, 2019

Alexis DeBina-Bautista and Emily Bryce stepped up in a big way for No. 5 Moanalua in a key 25-15, 27-26, 25-18 OIA East girls volleyball sweep of Kalaheo on Tuesday night. On their home court and without leader Tayli Ikenaga — who tweaked her foot in the second set and left the match after seven kills — Na Menehune wobbled and almost lost that second set. Instead, they fought back to grab it on the deciding 27th point. Then in […]

Mililani’s endurance pays off in OIA’s new best-of-5 format

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2019

In the words of Val Crabbe, it was Pi‘i Gora who had the most magical of words. No. 3-ranked Mililani was deep in the hole in hostile territory. Kapolei, the No. 9 team in the state, wasn’t overtly unfriendly, nor were Hurricane fans. However, the ‘Canes could smell victory. It was oh, so close, with Kapolei up 2-0 on Monday night after taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-14. This matchup of unbeatens in the OIA West looked nothing […]

Q&A: Moanalua’s positively gritty OH, Tayli Ikenaga

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2019

Tayli Ikenaga has a gift. She knows how to keep things simple. Success, it seems, has a basic recipe. Simple, not easy. >> CLICK HERE TO READ TODAY’S FEATURE STORY ON IKENAGA IN THE HONOLULU STAR-ADVERTISER The Moanalua junior is, at 5 feet, 6 inches, not the prototypical outside hitter for a highly-ranked girls volleyball team. Yet, Ikenaga is one of the most effective outside hitters in the state. She amassed 28 kills in an epic five-set win over Kahuku […]
